re texasbookworm's comment - On your drive from York to Edinburgh you will have time to stop at either Hadrian's Wall or Alnwick Castle/Gardens - not both because you'd need at least 2 or 3 hours at eiter one.
I highly recommend one or the other. As for annhig's comment re the flights from Edinburgh and home . . . What times are the two flights? If your flight to Rio is morning or early afternoon I'd consider taking an evening flight from EDI to LHR. You could still have dinner in Edinburgh see the last few things, but sleep at a LHR hotel and be ready to fly out the next day. |
Meant to add - the plan (except maybe for the flight from Edinburgh to London, depending on flight times) looks VERY good.

Morgana: Thanks for your help! I will start searching for B&Bs now, as I have the specific dates. If you have any recommendation, It will be helpful! :)
Texasbookworm: Thanks for the tip. I’ve looked at some pictures of Hadrian's Wall and it looks amazing. But unfortunately, I planned to visit York the day of my arrival, so I don’t think I will have time available to visit Hadrian's Wall. Maybe next trip to the UK! annhig: Separate flights. But I plan to leave early from Edinburgh on the 25th, as my flight from London to Rio is only 10pm. So I think I have time to work with in case of flight delay/cancellation. Thanks! janisj: Unfortunately, I don’t think I will have time to visit either one. (but It is pinned in my maps, just in case! :) I am also considering returning the car on May 21st (last day in York) and take the train to Edingurgh. What do you think? Regarding the flights, have only booked London-Rio (leaves 10pm). I plan to book an early flight Edinburgh-London (8-9am), so I can do everything leisurely. Do you think it is a good plan? janisj (Meant to add): Awsome! I was only able to do it because of you and the other forum members. Huge thanks to all!!! |
>>I am also considering returning the car on May 21st (last day in York) and take the train to Edingurgh. What do you think? <<
That is a fine idea if you don't plan on stopping places along the way. The train goes from the center of York to the very center of Edinburgh in just over 2 hours - much faster than you could drive it, there is decent coastal scenery on the 2nd half of the journey . . . and driving IN Edinburgh is not fun. W/ a 10 PM flight you are fine flying down the same morning. There are lots of flights during the day, so even if there is a delay they'll get you to LHR with time to spare. |
Hello all,
I was able to anticipate the trip to April. The itinerary remains the same, but starting April 8th and leaving April 29th. I've already bought the flight tickets and booked the below hotels: London - Hampton by Hilton London Waterloo Bath - Membland Guest House I would like to know how is the weather in April? Cold, Rainy? Janisj: I've decided to take the train from York to Edinburgh! Thanks! |
>>I would like to know how is the weather in April? Cold, Rainy?<<
yes -- or warm, sunny, cool, windy . . . or very likely all 6 -- and sometimes all on the same day. Just think layers -- that will get you through anything. Plus something waterproof or water repellant, and an umbrella (if you use an umbrella -- some prefer just a jacket hood. I'm an 'umbrella person' myself) |
Hello all,
I've created a link with everything I have pinned on my map for this trip. Of course I will not be able to go to all of these places, but I'll try :) Below is my final itinerary. https://mapsengine.google.com/map/ed...w.kAVlij65JTsk April 2014 Apr 8,9,10,11,12,13 (sleeping in London) - London / Windsor Castle Apr 14 - early morning driving to Stonehenge - sleeping in Bath Apr 15 (sleeping in Bath) - Bath Apr 16 - early morning driving to Bibury, Bourton-on-the-Water and Stow-on-the-Wold (Sleep in Burford) Apr 17 (sleeping in Burford) - Oxford Apr 18 (sleeping in Burford) - Cotswold (Broadway, Chipping Campden) Apr 19 - early morning driving to Liverpool (sleeping in Liverpool) Apr 20 - (sleeping in Liverpool) - Liverpool Apr 21 - Early trip to York - York (city center) - sleeping in York Apr 22 (sleeping in York) - York (Castle Howard, Rievaulx Abbey) Apr 23 (sleeping in York) - York (North Yorkshire Moors Railway and Whitby) Apr 24 (sleeping in York) - York (Fountains Abbey, Yorkshire Dales National Park) Apr 25 - early morning driving to Edinburgh – sleeping in Edinburgh Apr 26 (sleeping in Edinburgh) - Edinburgh Apr 27 (sleeping in Edinburgh) - St Andrews Apr 28 (sleeping in Edinburgh) - Glasgow or Stirling Apr 29 - Flight from Edinburgh to London – Flight from London to Rio de Janeiro Once again! Huge thanks to all :) |
Looks very nice. I'd maybe move St. Andrews up one day so you can then ditch the car. Edinburgh, Stirling and Glasgow are all easily done by public transport and that will save you several days of rental charges.
Even though St. Andrews is also pretty easy by public transport, having a caris good so you can also visit the fishing villages likeCrail and Anstruther. |
great planning, Conrado.
[nice to see how you've taken our advice on board too!] |
I agree - looks good. Your Yorkshire days are busy but perfectly manageable and I hope you have a wonderful time.
And the 'Janisj' seal of approval is always a very good sign - she's soon tell you if she spotted a problem with your plans! |
janisj: Thanks! My plan was to return the car in April 25 as soon as I get to Edinburgh, but I will follow your advise and go directly from York to St Andrew and return the car late at nigh on April 25 in Edinburgh. Just added the mentioned villages on the map :) tks!
annhig: I am very glad I´ve found this forum and a group of fantastic people that helped me big time!! :) Morgana: Agreed! specially April 25th, when I will try to do Fountains Abbey and Yorkshire Dales National Park in the same day... but if I won´t able to do it, I will have a great excuse to go back :) janisj is great... I will have to send her a gift after my trip!! hehe Please let me know if/when you come to Rio de Janeiro... I will be glad to give a lot of great tips!! THANKS!!! |
Hello All,
I just wanted to let you know that I had a wonderful honeymoon in the UK and I want to thank you all for the tips. Find below a link with some pictures! :) https://www.flickr.com/photos/125804...7645454002182/ Best regards, Conrado Ducommun |
Gorgeous photos. Glad you had a great time, and thanks for posting. Pretty wife, too!
|
great photos
|
Looks like you had a wonderful time! . . . Just one question . . . How did you fit Findhorn into your plan (I was surprised to see those photos) - it is a looooong way from the places on your original itinerary.
|
carolyn: Thanks!! We really had a great time… She is gorgeous :) hehehe
bilboburgler: Thanks!! janisj: We sure had a wonderful time!! England and Scotland both marvelous countries… I’ve made a small adjustment in the itinerary… We’ve spent 3 days in Edinburgh (25, 26 and 27), rented a car early morning on the 28th and drove to Findhorn, (my wife really wanted to go to the ecovillage)… we’ve ended up spending a great (and sunny) day in a peaceful and beautiful place :) |
Great pics and so glad it all went smoothly. :-)
|
Good pictures. You seem to have covered a lot of ground and had nice weather
|
Thanks RM67!
MissPrism: Thanks! we were very lucky with the weather! only 3 cloudy days in a 21 days trip.. :) |
What camera did you use? Your pictures are great.
