Thank you for your suggestions...more is oh so welcome.
We are booking into Les Brises June 25th through the 28th and probably getting scooters. We still would like recommendations for hotels 125 euro range for Carcassonne and St. Cirq Lapopie. Thank you. Laura

hi curiousaboutit,
it may be that I've found your thread too late to influence your itinerary/wanderings.
but if you are keen on towns, you might enjoy both Toulouse and Perpignan. probably 2 nights in toulouse, and one in Perpignan would suffice if all you did was sight-see in the centres villes. we liked them both very much, but particularly perpignan. we disliked the look of all the people and traffic in Carcassonne so much that we just drove straight through. Chacun a son gout!

We almost exclusively stay in Gites while in France, but before we "discovered" gites, we used Karen Brown's guides to find hotels. We've been using them for about 25 years (she is from San Mateo - where we live). Here is her recommendation for St Cirq Lapopie

I believe that on the hotel's own web site, you can view & select your actual room.
She has recommendations for Carcassonne also.

We had a horrible experience at the Hotel Pelissaria. They put us up in their garage (which was admittedly furnished as a sort-of bedroom, but dank and smelly). Then, Sunday morning, they weren't open for breakfast and wouldn't even serve us coffee, despite there being several staff people in the dining room. In fact, we never found a cup of coffee anywhere in St-Cirq-Lapopie, despite roaming the whole town. It wasn't a huge deal, as I'm not even much of a coffee drinker, but I found it exceedingly odd to be in a French town where you couldn't get a cup of coffee!
I know others have had very good experiences at this hotel. Just sayin'.....
