I would, of course, investigate all the day trip options from each city. Then you are prepared to venture into the countryside. Sometime we love a city and take no day trips. Other times we take all of them.

I do like large cities but I much prefer small cities. Prague, Vienna, Ljubljana, Bratislava, Budapest are amazing cities to visit. In the Czech Republi, I loved: Cesky Krumlov, Kutnahora and Olomouc. Lake Bled and Lake Bohinj in Slovenia are a must. Bojnice, Trencin, Trnava in Slovakia are musts. Eger and Pecs are like Budapest but smaller. Hope these little towns give you some nice ideas to visit instead of big cities.

I love to stay in large cities and use them as bases from which to hop to nearby places of interest and then come back to the livelier often big cities at night.

All of those cities offer sweet day trips - especially Vienna.
