My husband and I will be staying in Bolzano for two nights in September 2014. We will be using train and bus and would like accommodations in the city in a two or three star accommodation.

It has been a while since a similar question has been asked and I am hoping for some updated information,

There are many good hotels at Bolzano/Bozen

I was at Hotel Stiegl, between the railway station and the station of the Ritten cableway.
There are also some charming hotels in the pedestrian zone of the historic city center.

Can't help with hotels because we stayed in Ortisei but don't miss seeing the Ice Man Otsi when you are in Bolzano! It was amazing !

Shirley_pevensey, for me the draw of Balzano is the archaeological museum and it is a good stay over and catch my breath option after 24+ hours of travel, and it is a gateway to Val Gardena our main objective on this part of the trip

<what is so interesting about Bolzano>

Bolzano is a lovely little town. We stayed there for two nights and spent our first day leisurely strolling through the town and visiting the Ice Man. The second day was a Sunday and the families were out enjoying the beautiful day.

We headed to the far side of town where there is a lovely long area to stroll along the park. Families were playing soccer, couples were strolling hand in hand while music wafted throughout the area. We grabbed a gelato and joined them. There were wonderful views of the mountains. Bolzano feels like a real town, not a tourist trap. I would return again in a heartbeat.

We stopped for an overnight in Bozen/Bolzano heading north to the Tyrol. It is a very nice town with good natural scenery from the highway.

I really liked Bolzano too.

Do not miss the archeological museum, home of the Ice Man. We also enjoyed the arcaded shopping area and the park. There are great views in every direction.

There was a shuttle bus in the center of town that took us on a great day trip to see the ruins of Castel Roncolo.

We spent only an afternoon there specifically to visit the archaeology museum to see the Ice Man (well worth it!). We were on our way from Verona deeper into the Dolomites or we would have stayed a night - my brief impression was much as michele_d describes it above.

...furhtermore, Bolzano (in Italian)/Bozen (in German)/Bulsaun (in Ladin) is a completely bilingual town with equal parts of German and Italian speaking inhabitants (the Ladin speaking minority being extremely small).
I like bilingual towns like Bolzano/Bozen, Aosta/Aoste, Udine/Videm, Biel/Bienne, Fribourg/Freiburg, Murten/Morat, Mulhouse/Mülhausen, Strasbourg/Strassburg, Sarte/Sardene, Luxembourg/Letzeburg .....
