2005 Vacation
What a great place for information!!! We have to chose between: Germany, Austria,& Switzerland, or Italy. We dont care much for crowds or big cities. Like cosatal locations, castles, abbies, churches ect... small villages, B&B's. Tours look to be economical but I wonder about quality. Well there you go you travel aficionados. Let me have it.

Well looks to be the end of May through the second week of June, so twelve to fourteen days. Very interested in WWII attractions.Again not very interested in the hustle and bustle of big cities other than a short visit to see main attractions. My wife also loves to visit castles.Thank for your input.

there is a wealth of info on this board and other sites to help you put a trip together. visit the website of the countries you mentioned. be more specific when searching this board. in may-june you will be ahead of the crowds. coastal area somewhat limited in your choices-baltic area of germany. do you mean rivers and lakes?
another possibility is to look at tour brochures then plan using the outline.

Well, stating the obvious I suppose, but unless you like the "coasts" of lakes then Switzerland is definitely out as would be Austria. In other words WHAT is most important to you? I would say Germany for castles along the Rhine (what's left of some of them) or the Ludwig castles in Bavaria including Herrenchiemsee (the largest of all of them)which most tourists from abroad do not bother to visit (which, if you don't like big crowds would make it an excellent choice.

Hi gunter,
>We have to chose between: Germany, Austria,& Switzerland, or Italy.<
It is hard to tell from your hice of words and punctuation whether you you are choosing betweeen (a) Germany, Austria and Switzerland and (b) Italy, or if you must choose one from among the four listed countries.
In either case, I suggest that you get some guide books, come up with a draft itinerary and come back for comments, OR
go to a travel agent.

The answer is the Normandy region of course. You can stay on the beach at the La Cremaliere (sp?) We went with five kids, ages 5 to 17 and had a ball. There is sun, beach, churches, history and there is even a castle. We had wonderful rooms and they bring breakfast to you- There is a restaurant on site and breakfast, dinner or lunch is included in the price. It is a several course meal even for lunch. I live in Germany on the Rhine- it is a wonderful place to visit and live lots of B&B's, cathedrals, history etc- no beach. Although we did find the exact spot where Patton crossed the Rhine and there is a small beach are there. Each country has it's own flavor and things to do- it is wonderful living over here for awhile.

In 12 to 14 days you can cover a lot to ground at a fairly leisurly pace. I'm sure you've noticed there are few coastal areas in G/A/S (except up north). We love southern Germany and Austria. Beautiful Castles, lot of quaint small towns and cozy B&B's. If you've never been you might want to consider Munich, Fussen, Garmish, Mittenwald, Breteschgaden, Oberammergau, Salzburg, and Hallstadt. If you still have time head for Vienna with a stop in Melk. Late May and early June is a great time to see the Alpine areas as Spring is coming into full bloom.

We had a great trip along the Mosel River in Germany in June of this year. The Mosel suffered much less damage than the Rhine did during the war, so there are lots of charming towns, enough castles to keep you interested - plus wine-tasting, great bike paths (especially if one of you likes the flats and the other likes hills), Roman history in Trier. Book a car and drive, or rent bikes for part of the trip. Not enough to keep you busy for two weeks (you might combine this with another region in Germany) but certainly enough to keep you busy for 5-7 days.

France was the first country that came to mind for coast/church/abbies/small villlages etc but gunter didn't list that as a choice. it would be the perfect solution-normandy for 1 wk and brittany the other.
