20 Hrs. in Basel w/o Any CHF - Can We Do It?

Jump to last reply

DH and I and another couple are taking a Rhine River cruise in 3 wks. that ends in Basel. We arrive on a Sun. morning and will need to get to our hotel near the SBB bahnhof by taxi, then to the airport in Mulhouse early the next morning (I assume by bus from SBB) for our flight back to the US.

This question sounds a little stupid even to me, since I've never considered spending any time in a country without any local currency. But after looking at the Zoo Basel website and noticing that they take Euros and credit cards and knowing that taxis in some places and museums and restaurants in most places take credit cards, I started thinking that maybe we could do this without having to change money. I'm sure we would have to get CHF outside of Switzerland, maybe at the airport in Amsterdam before the cruise, if we need them Sun. AM for the taxi.

If we could do everything on credit cards or with euros, even taking the loss on 1:1, it would probably be cheaper than getting just a few CHF. And we wouldn't have leftover CHF to exchange at the airport or wind up taking home. (Don't mind keeping euros; in fact, I try to keep a couple hundred for the next trip. But would rather not have extra CHF.)
