2 weeks in Slovenia
Hi,
I planning on visiting Slovenia for 2 weeks. Now I won't be flying to Slovenia, I will fly to Vienna and take a train from there to Slovenia. I will not be renting any cars, but will be making use of trains and public bus. Do you think I can do this: 4 nights Maribor, 4 nights Lake Bled and 6 nights Ljubljana? I will depart by plane from Ljubljana, so that should be my end base. Any idea how I can may be work it out to get a good feel of it? Are there any good day trips from the mentioned bases that I can do using trains / buses, that won't take long to reach...max 1.5hrs each way.
What do you think?

I spent about ten days in Slovenia in September (flew into Munich, a few days in Austria before Slovenia, a few days in Italy afterward, flew out of Milan). Working on a trip report but don't hold your breath...
In brief: I trained from Graz, Austria to Maribor (2 nights), day trip to Ptuj and trained to Ljubljana (2 nights, stop on the way for a few hours in Celje, easy stop, right on the train route). I rented a car in Ljubljana to drive to Bled, Bohinj, and drive over the Vrsic Pass (through the Julian Alps) into the Soca Valley and on to Piran, where I returned the car (in Portoroz actually). You can easily get to Bled and Bohinj by train or bus, but I'd say the scenic detour I drove from Ljubljana through Skofja Loka to Bled was well worth the cost and hassle of renting a car - it may have been the highlight of my trip.
Personally, I'd recommend the stop in Celje if you have time - nice castle on the hill with beautiful views and a nice old town. Ptuj is also well worth a long day trip (by train) from Maribor. You can do day trip to Skofja Loka by bus I believe and day trip to Kamnik (which I did not get to do) by train. Piran is also a beautiful town on the coast - I'd recommend spending more than a day there though I suppose if you go way off season it may not be so interesting. While Lake Bled is beautiful and worth seeing, four nights would be two much for me; a day trip would have been fine but if you want to bus out to Lake Bohinj too from there you'd want two nights in Bled, probably.
How about:
4 nights Maribor (day trip to Ptuj, maybe day trip elsewhere)
4 nights in Ljubljana (stop in Celje off the train)
+ day trips to Skofja Loka and Kamnik, maybe to the Postojna caves.
2 nights in Bled (day trip to Lake Bohinj)
2 nights in Piran - which means a long day of busing though if you start in Bled; maybe you can stop in Ljubljana for lunch?
2 nights in Ljubljana, which gives you one last day to see whatever else you missed previously?

It depends on what you want to do and experience, but I can't imagine spending that much time in either location - and I loved both of them! But of course, I don't know what I missed.

My husband and I were in Slovenia last May. That seems like a very long time to be in those places, especially Ljubljana. If you want to just relax in Bled then that would be okay. We were there 3 nights and really that was 1 too many. Ljubljana is not that big, so I would really think about what you wnat to do there and how long you really want to be there.

I agree that 6 nights seems like a lot for Ljubljana. Then again, the OP wants to do day trips, so they'd have evenings there and several days somewhere else. Ljubljana is a great place to spend evenings in my opinion, compared to many other places in Slovenia. As a base for day trips, then, it seems almost ideal.
And the way I suggested splitting it up, it's really 4 days + 2 days (OP wants to fly out of Ljubljana at the end anyway).

I spent ten days in Slovenia in September and certainly didn't think THAT was too much! Yes, it is a small country, but there is a lot to see. I hope to go back some day and see more. Croatia is great too.
