Yes, the French refer to these seniors as the "troisieme age". We generally travel in September and besides having reservations in Paris (a must) and high tourist areas, like Mont St. Michel, we prefer to "wing it", loving the freedom this gives us.
Haven't had a problem yet, but we also start looking for a room around 3-4 pm. Alsace is a high traffic area, so you might want to reserve ahead. We didn't and found a room even on the wine route towns sans probleme. Good luck with whatever you choose.

We do have reservations in Paris at the Hôtel de Latour Maubourg for 5 nights.
We will follow Ira's suggestion and spend our first night(Friday)at Lake Constance and drive to Burgundy the next morning. Since we will be spending a few days in Burgundy and arriving on a Saturday, I will get a reservation there -- probably Beaune. Haven't decided about the rest of the trip yet. Just got one of the "squinty-eyed" looks from my husband when I suggested additional reservations.

Hi sg,
>We will follow Ira's suggestion ....<
You are very wise.
Some suggestions:
Plot your route at www.viamichelin.com.
Don't go into Switzerland unless you are prepared to pay about 35E for a road tax sticker.
The scenic routes are highlighted in green.
Here is the route we will take on our upcoming trip: (It's in two parts because viamichelin limits the number of waypoints)
Lindau to Bessoncourt via Schönau im Schwarzwald and Altkirch
Bessoncourt to Beaune.
Our Alternate route is not as scenic, but saves an hour
Lindau to Beaune via Schönau im Schwarzwald and Altkirch
Enjoy your visit.

In reviewing some of my France notes, I noticed that many businesses, museums, etc are closed on Sundays.
Does that mean that we will have to sit around and twiddle our thumbs in Beaune? Anyone have any experience in Beaune on a Sunday?

I remember that everything was closed on Monday morning. I think that some things at least were open on Sunday afternoon - we took a day trip on Sunday and found everything open in the small villages - so would think things would be open in Beaune. We had planned to shop in some of the stores on Monday, but they were mostly closed.
