2 weeks in Costa Del Sol
Our first time in Spain! 2 couples staying in Mezquitilla (between Malaga and Nerje) for 2 weeks in November. We're using Mezquitilla as a home base for these 2 weeks. What on earth do we do for 2 weeks in one spot??? Where should we "day trip" to? We like to eat/drink (especially the drink part) and relax. Suggestions and help would be very much appreciated!

You will find many interesting day trip destinations:
Nerja (town and caves), Frigiliana (nice White Village) Málaga and Marbella (yet the latter may be rather quiet due to low season) Ronda Antequera/ El Torcal Natural Park Granada/ Alhambra Córdoba If you have a self-catering apartment, the next major supermarket(or hípermercado) is near Vélez-Málaga right on A7 motorway. Huge choice also of local produce or wine, and better prices than the small convience stores in the beach resorts. |
Thank you Cowboy.
You must know the area... are there any wineries close? |
That's the region where muscatel grape is produced, the wine is sweet. The main town in the area is Cómpeta, a nice daytrip.
There are several choices, especially the loop from the coast to Algarrobo, Sayalonga, Cómpeta (but do not miss Archez), Salares, Sedella (these three towns still have the old minarets turned into church towers), Canillas de Aceituno (restaurant La Sociedad, specialty the kid goat, min 4 persons. Phone 952518292) and then head back to the coast. Other towns worth visiting are Periana and the surroundings of the reservoir, and Alhama de Granada, which I highly recomend. East from Mezquitilla you have Cerro Gordo with a good restaurant: La Leyenda (I used to go and it was good, but I have not been back for some years, so I cannot update. The views though must be the same, from high over the sea); and Salobraña, that still keeps the old town on the hill. From here you can travel to Las Alpujarras, especially the towns of Capileira and Trevelez. |
Josele, You gave me the same info earlier for my trip. Just an update. Locals there in Nerja tell me that La Leyenda has been closed for a number of years. There is still a highly recommended restaurant on Cerro Gordo though, it's the Mirador. I've looked at the website, and it looks excellent, if not a bit expensive.

Thaks for the update. I see the Mirador has the same beautiful views to the sunset. If you happen to visit, pls write about the food.

Josele, I certainly will. I figure that in the two weeks we'll be there we should be able to try 8 or 10 restaurants, as well as many of the bars. I'll stop back after the trip with a full trip report. We're really looking forward to it.

Ruzdintravels, I know I'm a funny one to give you advice, since I've yet to be in the area, but I've done a ton of research on it, and I'd like to share our two week plans. We'll be in La Herradura the end of October. I agree with all of the previous suggestions, but a couple not mentioned are: a trip up and around Lake Vinuela. Thats just back toward Malaga and up into the mountains at Velez Malaga. It sounds beautiful with lots of restaurants. Another day trip is up into the Alpujarras. Off the road leading to Granada, visiting the towns of Orgiva, Pampaneira, Bubion and others. Our plans include Nerja, Frigiliana, Almunecar, Salobrena, Lake Vinuele, of course Granada. Those day trips, along with lots of time sitting on our terrace drinking wine, and finding the best restaurants, will make two weeks seem like just a few days. Hope your trip will be great. Larry
