Maybe 4 people could hire a taxi from the nearest train station and quickly hit some places of their heritage? A splurge but with limited time...or rent a car for a day or so themselves.

I think car hire would be the way to go for this. It's so odd, the area is right adjacent to Europe's largest port, but it's such a relative backwater.
