2 night family hotel between CDG and Orly
 

My family of 4 arrives in Paris from the US late July and needs to find a hotel for 2 nights ideally midway between airports. We land at 8am at CDG and fly out of Orly 2 days later at 7am. We have been to Paris before and are only flying in there only because we are using frequent flier tickets on our way to Croatia. At this time our only definite plans for our 1 full day in Paris are the Pompidou on a Monday. I'd like to find a midway hotel (or at least the suggestion of an area to start looking in) so that we don't have too far to travel from CDG after arriving and also don't have too far to go at the crack of dawn when we fly out of Orly. My kids are teenagers so we'll be looking at family rooms. Hopefully not much more than $200/night.

Midway frankly does not make any particular sense. Midway is essentially the city center. So you arrive at CDG....I would then take a taxi as you have a family of 4 and head to stay in Paris in any area that appeals to you...then take a taxi to Orly on morning of departure. It is not like someone just with an overnight..you have places and time to visit and those 2 airports are opposite directions. Maybe I am missing something here but who would want to stay near either of those airports and commute to the city for 2 nights?

And if you are going to do the commute, why not do it from Orly?

How about area around the Denfert-Rochereau Metro? You can get there via RER from CDG and take the Orly bus from the station. It's in the 14th, just below Monparnasse Cemetary.

The only hotel I know in the area is the Marriott which is just down the hill from the station. If you do a search query for hotels in that area, lots should pop up in all price ranges. Lively area, fun shops, cafés, etc.

Why not just IN Paris. Taxi TO your hotel from CDG. Taxi FROM your hotel to Orly.

I was thinking a midway location so we didn't have an hour transfer from CDG to Orly after our long flight, solely for the benefit of being close to the airport on the morning we leave. I'm not interested in trying to stay right by either airport. Staying in the heart of Paris is a great suggestion, as long as we can find a family room for our price range (around $200/night) at the peak of summer. I assumed that hotels in the heart of the city would be out of that price range during that time and that staying out of the center would be more affordable. Perhaps I'm wrong.

If you've been to Paris before, don't you know that city center would be midway? But I think you will not get there in much less time than you would to Orly, though, and then you'll have a longer commute the next day. So you have to think about what your wishes are re both commutes.

You can find hotels at about any price point in Paris, just depends on your wants and standards. Peak of summer isn't an expensive hotel time in Paris, in fact, hotel rates are often lower at end of July and August. Yes, staying in a suburb probably would be more affordable, though. Family rooms are usually for parents with small children, not a family of basically four adults, which teens are in size.

Denfert Rochereau area isn't a bad idea but there aren't really a lot of hotels around it, surprisingly. None are that good. There are some modern chain hotels around the peripherique points that should be in that budget, look for an Accor hotel. The Mercure Alesia, for example, had double rooms for only about US$90 and despite the name is right near Porte d'Orleans metro stop. That isn't the RER line to the airport, though, depends how you plan to get there, from that location, Orly isn't that far by taxi.

I think you can find two double rooms for that price (say about US$100 per room per night) in some of the cheaper chain hotels like Ibis or some small cheaper hotel in the center, but you will find it very difficult to find a hotel for $200 or less per night that will have a room for four adults. Few hotels have rooms like that to begin with.

The hotel I mentioned is higher than your budget but try booking.com or similar for the Denfert-Rochereau area. I've stayed down by Porte d'Orleans but it was in an apartment. Christina is right about the chains possibly meeting your budget (it's $200 total, right?) and having family rooms but the location isn't as good.

If you want to see Pompidou, check that area and also the 5th. Lots of reasonable basic hotels but you're running out of time and your budget is a bit tight. It's okay for a double but you need more.

A good rule of thumb is that often any money you save staying far out is lost on costs of transport x 4 people and a loss of time.

oh, sure, I agree being on the peripherique isn't exactly a "good" location, but the hotels are sometimes cheaper there and it would then be quicker in the morning.

The problem is kanne doesn't want to spend an hour getting from CDG to Orly but I think it will take about that much time to get from CDG into the center of Paris. SO if that really were the sole reason of not going to Orly for a hotel, I don't think the reason holds up. And a metro ticket costs the same regardless of where you are in Paris, whether going from Porte d'Orleans metro stop somewhere or from Republique metro stop.

Staying around the Pompidou may not be a bad idea if one wants to go there. It's not my favorite area but they do have family rooms in the Les Halles Novotel, I believe. They are one of the few hotels in Paris where you can find rooms with two double beds in them. If the teens are not the same sex, that wouldn't work, though, and it's still more than $200 a night. I still think two double rooms is going to be more do-able.
