2 night auto loop out from Edinburgh?

2 night auto loop out from Edinburgh?
Changed our plans, I think.
We have only 4 nights in Scotland. Think we will take the London-Edinburgh train, spend 2 nights in Edinburgh and 2 nights on a loop from and back to Edinburgh.
Does anyone have any suggested routes for our driving loop? And places to overnight? I'd sort of like to see Sterling, otherwise open.
Would a night in the Isle of Mull and a night near Sterling be a good idea? We like dramatic scenery, nice B&Bs or small hotels with good food available.
Or should we stick closer to Edinburgh and maybe the East coast?

With two nights, I would not try to get out to any of the islands. I would probably do something like Stirling and St. Andrews and then back to Edinburgh. But there is some beautiful scenery along the west coast even without going out to any islands.
The Undiscovered Scotland website has a few driving suggestions that might give you some more ideas:

One of their "loops" is near Stirling; you could head from there up towards Pitlochry or out towards Oban, Loch Awe and Loch Fyne. We spent a week on Loch Fyne a few years ago and loved that area.

We have done a similar trip, and here is my recommendation:
On the way to Stirling, drive across Forth Bridge and take the road along the Firth with a stop in Culross, a very picturesque fishing village. Then proceed to Stirling.
From Stirling, drive to the Lake of Menteith. Take the ferry to Inchmahome Priory - a most picturesque ruined abbey on an island with much historical significance.
Stay overnight in Aberfoyle. The next day, drive to Loch Lomond - one of the most beautiful lochs in Scotland. Drive the west bank road northwards, with stops in Cameron House (manor house that has been turned into a hotel - the bar is in the old castle and the views from the surrounding park are great) and in Luss (village). Proceed northwards, then eastwards and see Loch Lubhair, maybe Loch Tay (short detour), Loch Earn, maybe Loch Voil (short detour), Loch Lubnaig, Loch Venachar and Loch Achray and get a little taste of the highlands (Ben More).
I will probably be evening when you return to Aberfoyle. So use the next morning for the Trossachs. Do the Achray Forest Drive which leads you through beautiful scenery and drive through the Trossachs to Loch Katrine. Board the steamboat Sir Walter Scott and make the boat trip on Loch Katrine. This will be highlight of your trip. Then drive back to Edinburgh.
If you have time you may stop in Linlithgow to visit the castle.
On this loop, you will see breathtaking scenery, some of Scotland's most beautiful lakes, mountains, picturesque villages, at least one castle and a ruined abbey where Mary Queen of Scots found refuge. It can be done with two nights and you won't have trouble to find accomodation in Aberfoyle (we had stayed in Cameron House but this is neither a B&B nor a small hotel but serves outstanding food).
