Unless your hotel are already paid in Barcelona..have you considered renting a car from ZRH and enjoying the trip down to spain with the kids and then returning to ZRH? Sounds like you will need a car anyway for many of your jaunts.. juts easier than public transportation with kids.

In the future, when doing an open jaw, always use MULTI-CITY instead of two one-ways. Surprisingly cheap.

Again, renting a car sounds nice if it were just the two of us (adults), but with the kids...I think they are going to be over "traveled" and will just want to "be there." So I think a morning flight to BCN from ZRH on the 9th will have to be our plan.

You may have more/cheaper/better schedules out of GVA. So don't forget to check that. Also, from Basel. ( ryanair)
All easily reached by train from Zurich.
www.whichbudget.com might give you additional companies you hadn't found before. Flybaboo.com used to fly to valencia from GVA. Just throwing out ideas here in case you find a late night flight somewhere you think you can make.
Have you called the airlines and asked them if you could add on the round trip BCN flight? You never know. You may be surprised at the change fee.. might be better than all this combination search. Who knows until you ask.

I'll call to ask. It may be better than this combination and this stress! I'd fly from Basel that night since it's only like what...an hour from Zurich, but getting all the way to Geneva doesn't seem appealing with kiddos. I know I'm going to be pretty wiped after an 11 hour flight...with a baby on top of me the entire way! They'll sleep on the plane, but mama probably won't.

Way too much money to switch anything on our itinerary. So I'll spend the night in Zurich and fly out to BCN the next morning on Vueling. Kinda bummed to be adding ANOTHER travel day to already packed itinerary, but maybe it will be good for our jet lag.
