NurseSkip said in a previous post, "I'm having a rough time finding hotel rooms in London (cheaper rooms, that is)", I think it fair to assume that cost is a consideration.

Louise's idea of hotelink is another good, economical suggestion.

Hi, MurseSkip!

Man, oh man! One wonders how your Mum ever gave birth! She can't possibly be THAT fragile!

On the other hand, this is another vote for the hired car!

If you have never done this before, here's what happens. As soon as the plane lands, your Mum will, hopefully, be able to get her things together and walk along the gangplank by herself. Once inside the terminal, she will see this handsome young man holding a placard with her last name on it. He will be immaculately dressed and have a movie star smile. She will be dazzled. He will take her carryons from her, offer his strong muscular arm to her and your Mum will be escorted to a waiting car. He will take care of her luggage and any other needs she may have. He will also get her to the hotel all in one piece.

After this experience, count yourself and your aunt lucky to be able to see your Mum again and spend time with her in London! SHE will be gallivanting around, having the time of her life!

Go for it, NurseSkip! If you can afford to go to Europe, you can afford to send your Mum in style to her hotel.

I'm really appreciative of everyone's thoughtful replies.

It's probably just my own worries about her staying alone on her first big overseas trip actually. She's pretty sturdy and will do fine, whatever she decides to do. BTW, Janis, the hotel is the BW Paddington on Devonshire Terrace, so she should have no problems staying in their public rooms.

I will check out the car hire sites though, because I never thought about that option. Calling the hotel in advance is a good idea also. Just needed a collection of experts to show me the obvious, I guess. In any case, expect a follow-up report on what she decided to do, as well as the hotel where we stayed.

I'm sure I'll be on this site again, as I used it extensively for my South Africa trip last winter. What did we ever do without the Internet ??!!??

PS 60-ish really isn't old, just seems "very mature" to me. BTW I'm a guy, lol!

Skip, I just hope my son will take as good care of me when I need it as you do your mom. You must be an angel. Have a great trip.

NurseSkip, I tend to not offer advice if my viewpoint has previously been expressed, but here goes. I will be 60 in December (so your Mom and I are "of an age&quotand have traveled to Europe from Dallas often over the last 25 years. I am now in the position of usually arriving alone. I get off of an over night trans atlantic flight pretty close to being a zombie. There is nothing better (keep in mind that I am alone, so no help in navigating, as your mother will be) than walking out of customs and handing luggage, me, and my life (for the next hour) over to a very nice, competent driver who will get me to where I need to go, maybe point out some sights on the way (if I am not snoring)and be extremely gracious. NO, it is not cheap to hire a car and driver. But the peace of mind is worth every penny!
I hope you, your mom and your aunt have a wonderful trip!! Please post a trip report. and let us know how you solved this problem.

jsmith--eating in pubs a couple of nights is no huge sacrifice--in factm London pub meals have improved substantially over the past couple of decades, yet still yield big savings over most restaurants. $50 is a small price to pay to make the trip a little more pleasant for someone who is on her first trip. Building her confidence for what as compared to the risk of getting the trip off to an unpleasant start if she gets flustered and confused.

jsmith, by the way, if you'd read NurseSkip's original post "simplicity and safety are paramount."

Thank you, Rufus, for letting me know about the pubs. I've been assuming for the last 55 years that they hadn't changed since my first visit in 1948. I did the math to keep it simple.
