2 full days in cote d'azure

We are staying in Nice and looking to do 2 day trips to the sourrounding areas. I would appreciate it for any thoughts on day trips. One day we were thinking of going to Monte Carlo and the next day to Cannes and other nearby towns. Any tips or points of interest would be much apreciated.

We are leaving in a week.

The train that runs between Nice and the Italian border is very good, so you can wait to see what the weather is like before committing yourself to excursions.

I would highly recommend Eze, and would also recommend that you skip Montecarlo. Some people believe it's a "must see" -- because rich people live there? It has royalty? There's a tune everybody can sing? -- but Montecarlo is jammed with same modern concrete condos you find in any sunny retirement community for the affluent, all piled on top of each other, with a marina for their boats. It's shopping malls are the same ones you find in Houston or Las Vegas. It sounds glamorous, but it's mainly blah.

By contrast, the 9th c. village of Eze is unique, even if filled with tourists.

Ok. I'm sold on Eze. So if I go to Eze are there other cities that I can see within the same day as Eze and what suggestions would you have for the second day?

Thanks so much

I also will have a car if that matters.

funny you suggest Eze... I personally was very disappointed last time I was there. We parked in a large parking lot with buses and walked up the hill with all tourists...

We enjoyed Rothschild Villa - not so much the villa proper, but the gardens were amazing!

Cannes is noteworthy b/c of the film festival. Not much else there.

Monaco is at least interesting b/c of the royal stuff - go see the palace, the Jacques Cousteau stuff. Yes, it is house upon house, but it is also interesting how they've built into the surrounding hills.

What about Antibes and the Picasso museum ? Also very enjoyable to walk along the water...

forgot to ask if you are spending any time in Nice proper ?

the old town is worthy of a day...

There is sort of a high road and low road to Eze. We took the high road there and really enjoyed the village, and then took the low road home sort of stopping along the beaches and cute towns.

We tried to go to Monte Carlo, but it was during the race preparations and we actually couldn't stop and park the car. We even had a handicapped permit and still couldn't find a spot! But it looked like we didn't miss much.
