2 days in Zurich and 1 day in Italy

We are scheduled to be in Zurich on the 21st arriving at 7am. Can you suggest places to go on that day? We are also planning to go to Lucerne the following day. We are just planning to take the train and then go to Mt Pilatus. Do we need to book in advance when going up the Alps? Also, we have to get back to Zurich early in the evening since we are taking the train to Rome at 9:00 pm. Just want to make sure that we have enough time to get back.

We are arriving Rome 9:00 am on the 23rd. We joined the trafalgar tours so we don't really have a problem with the tour since it is covered for Rome-Florence-Venice. However, on the day that we arrive, if anyone can suggest on what we can do since our tour starts the following day.

Our tour group ends on the 28 and we have extended 1 day in Italy because we would like to go to Pompei. I've seen tours for Naples-Pompei but some people would comment that going to Naples is not worth it. Any reaction to that? I was wondering if it would be a good idea to do a Pompei-Amalfi Coast tour instead. Is it a good idea to join a tour group even if it is a little pricey?WE only have 1 day since we are leaving the next day for LA.
Would appreciate any suggestion that you can give me. THanks!

Can you elucidate a little?

First, what month? That might make a difference if you're going at an unseasonal time for mountain trips, for instance.

Second: I understand you to be saying you're staying overnight in Zurich, but want to go somewhere else for a daytrip the first day, then a second daytrip to Lucerne, then backtrack to Zurich to pick up an overnight train to Rome? Or were you lookig for sightseeing recommendations in Zurich itself for day 1? And is Pilatus the only thing you're interested in in Lucerne? In your position it might be worth considering spending the night i Lucerne and having two days there - one for the city of Lucerne, the other for Pilatus. You can check the train details at www.sbb.ch .

Where does your Italian tour finish? Not Venice, I hope, although you name it last on your itinerary. If Rome, you can do a trip to Pompeii, although it's a long day.

Go directly to Luzern after you land. You catch the trains in the terminal and you are in Luzern in about 1:30.

Sorry for not being specific...We are arrivng Zurich this mnoth, November.Anyway, what we originally planned was to do a daytrip in Zurich (I saw a TV segment that Neiderdorf was a nice place) on the date of our arrival then go to Lucerne the following day. I thouht we could go around Lucerne a little bit before going to mt Pilatus. Is the time going to be very tight if we do this? We really would like to go to the Alps ,just take some pictures and go down if there is nothing else to do there. We really would like to be able to go to as many places in 2 days.

Our Trafalgar tour ends in Rome so we are planning to do another 1 day tour to Pompei. I've seen in the internet that they have the Naples-Pompei tour and they also have the Pompei-Amalfi coast. Which one is better. Don't know if this time of year is good for the coast tour to Amalfi?

Thanks

I agree with Bob's suggestion to go directly to Lucerne when you arrive, straight from the airport. Going into Zurich twice (upon arrival and then the next day to catch your train to Rome, doesn't make any sense).

I guess 11/09 was Nov. 09 - my bad, repeating after me mm/dd/yyyy = USA, dd/mm/yyyy = rest of the world.
