If you'd like to enjoy some of the best mountain scenery and maybe take a hike, one excellent spot in the Black Forest is Lake Titisee, a smallish lake with a resort town at one end (named "Titisee") and lots of nature elsewhere around the lake. If you're on a real budget, one of the neatest places to stay is in the Veltishof youth hostel, a former farmhouse that oozes with Black Forest atmosphere. It sits rather alone near the "other" end of the lake in beautiful surroundings. Here's a webpage with a photo:

http://www.djh.de/jugendherbergen/titisee-veltishof/

The town itself is fairly modern. Lots of restaurants, shops, a nice beach, just a place to relax, really. From Titisee, you can take train rides through the rugged mountain territory to other nearby BF towns or into Freiburg. It's a good place for a couple of days.

Triberg is a wonderful city in the heart of the "Schwarzald". The highest waterfall in Germany is also located there.

It is also a great place to buy clocks.

We have stayed @ the Parkhotel Wehrle (around $105 per night)

We have been to Germany several times. Would be glad to give you other suggestions.

Will you be along the Rhine or Neckar?
