2 Days In Spoleto

We're returning to Italy and going to be in Spoleto for two days this October - does anyone have any "don't miss" suggestions? It's our first time in this area, and we're staying at the Hotel dei Duchi.

I'm assuming you'll have a car. Within a 45 minute driving radius centered in Spoleto the following sites are located: Assisi, Foligno, Spello, Trevi, Todi, Terni and Narni, among others. If you increase this radius to around 1 hour, you may add Amelia, Norcia, Cascia, Perugia and Deruta. Take your pick :-)

It's not clear what you would visit on your way in/out. Anyway, a reasonable plan would call for driving directly to Assisi in one morning and play it by ear on the way back, visiting Spello, Foligno and eventually Trevi on the way back, depending on available time. The other day could be saved for a visit to Todi, Amelia, Terni and Narni. If you care for some pottery shopping instead, you could couple a visit to Deruta with a sightseeing tour of Perugia.

Paulo
What's the matter with spending time in Spoleto? It's an interesting place on its own, pleasant to get lost in for awhile. Also some great shops for souvenires as well as truffle-related food items. All the other places Paolo mentioned are also great to visit, but relax and enjoy where you are as well! Buon viaggio.

We loved Assisi. Make sure you get good information on sites in town, and what they represent to the followers of St. Francis. We found we missed some significant places. The hermitage is also interesting to visit.

Elizabeth,

If you like Italian pottery make sure you stop in Deruta for a few hours. The town is the center for pottery making in the region and the prices are much more reasonable then in any of the other towns. There are roads that run on each side of the highway. One has pottery manufacturers the other is lined with large shops(best place to buy IMO). The old center of town also has many shops. One store owner produces a line for Neimen Marcus. We had a great lunch in one of the only reasturants in the small old town.

Have fun!
Aileen
