2 days in southern Germany
I've just been asked to attend a trade show for my company in Nernberg on May 22 and 23. I'm flying in and out of Munich and will have 2 days on my own, Sat. and Sun. May 24 and 25 to explore. I'm more into mountains and scenery than big cities, so I'm thinking I'd like to see Bertesgarten and perhap's Neuschwanstein (too touristy?) and other sights towards the German/Austrian border. With so little time, I need help! Where to stay? What to see? I usually plan vacations long in advance, but in this case, should I just rent a car and wing it? I'm not fussy about accomodations as long as they're clean and safe. Any suggestions would be appreciated!
Thanks, Rich |

>> should I just rent a car and wing it? << YES.
Just head for Berchtesgarten - there are many lodging possibilities in the beautiful countryside surrounding the town. Forget Neuschwanstein - it's too far for only 2 days. |
PS,
You can do daytrips from your hotel in Munich. |
Since you're in Nuremburg, you should consider taking a day trip to Bamberg. Beautiful town w/preserved architecture/buildings, and plenty of local breweries (if you're into German beer). It is a unesco heritage site.

I disagree with Tuck - Neuschwanstein is not too far. We visited the area in half a day, driving ourselves, when we were in Munich. You could do it in a day.
Though I don't know any specific places to stay (just drove through), the area between Munich and Stuttgart is very, very pretty with rolling hills and farms and trees straight out of a landscape painting. |
I did a bus tour to Neuschwanstein from Munich as well.
Bamberg is really beautiful, and the area around Berchtesgaden is quite interesting, especially if you're interested in WWII history. The Eagle's Nest, constructed by Martin Bormann as a birthday present for Hitler is ther. (The Germans call it the Kehlstein.) You can also see the beautifl, mysterious lake called the Königsee, Salt Mines, etc. |
With only two days available, I would not plan or reserve in advance (except for the rental car) but keep an eye on the weather forecast once you'll be in Nürnberg.
End of May is not the time of year here when to expect stable sunny periods everywhere, and especially not in or near mountains. Either Berchtesgaden area (Google for the village of Ramsau), or Garmisch/Mittenwald, or Füssen offer thousands of places to stay, so finding a decent hotel should not be a problem. Berchtesgaden AND Neuschwanstein in one 2 day trip sounds a bit too much. |
