The tatoo is a great event held for a couple weeks in August. It's held at the entrance of Edinburgh Castle. It's a military tatoo, which consists of bagpipers, dancers, and military reviews from all around the world. We were there last year at this time and had the opportunity to attend. It was a fantastic evening. I would highly recommend it if you can possible get tickets. It was sold out last year but luckily we were able to get tickets because we ordered early.

Update:
First of all thanks to all those who helped me out here. After all the suggestions and countless hours of meaningless surfing :) I have changed my itinerary and made bookings even for the Buckingham Palace on wed morning. Anyone who is planning to see the palace during august i would strongly recommend to buy tickets in advance because surprisingly (I AM naive!) ;) they get sold very fast.
Back to the topic, i found a train journey with gner outbound from london to edinburgh and scotrail sleeper on the way back on tues night. It is more expensive but i guess i wont be 'miserable' during my tour :)

Lauren,
you reply was extremely helpful as i found something at the university. Thanks again

Keith,
Thanks and I must say you are a local!
the time for the last train from prestwick i found out after your reply.

Jay,
Thanks. Do you know about the scottishtours oban, glen castles tour?

Charlene,
Thanks

And Karl,
Thanks again :) I checked the tickets for tattoo are sold out!
Ed,
If you go to the search engine "Google" and enter "bus tours scotland", or "david urquhart travel" ( without the quotation marks) you will get a variety of sites and companies offering bus tours in Scotland. Some of the trips are specific, others general and cover most areas of the country.

Most of these will take longer than 2 days.

In the same search engine you could try "day trips from Glasgow" or "day trips from Edinburgh"

Good Luck!
