2 days in Munich
 

I would like to thank all those who suggested me to choose Munich over Frankfurt. Now that I have decided to go to Munich, what is must do and see things there over the two days. I will be there in late November. I also need advice on hotel. I'm looking for a moderate one with a convenient location.

Hi! I will be there in late November too (26th through 29th). It is the beginning of our 2 week trip through Germany.

I haven't planned much yet for that portion of our trip, but I know we're staying at the Le Meridien, which is right across the street from the train station.

Good choice. Check out the various Christmas Markets. Don't miss the world class art museums.

What is your price range for a hotel?

I recently stayed in the Courtyard by Marriott ($55 per night on Priceline). It is about a block from the back exit of the train station. It is a new property with quiet rooms and nice beds.

The Olympic stadium complex - a huge pleasant park

Dachau - a short enough S-Bahn ride to the suburbs and bus to the memorial and camp remains

Hofbrauhaus - Mandatory stop for American tourists - typical humungous German beer hall

Marienplatz for the clock show

Yes world class museums

And a great Schloss - on the outskirts - Nymphenberg or some name - really nice palace

If you like art, I highly recommend the Alte Pinakothek, which houses some of the world's greatest "old master" paintings, and the Glyptothek, which, in my opinion, is the finest museum of antique sculpture in the world.

If you like churches you could, of course, visit the Frauenkirche (look for the "Devil's Footprint" just inside). However, the uber-Baroque Asamkirche is interesting. The 300-ft. tower of the Peterskirche provides fabulous views of Munich (but there are only narrow stairs and no elevator).

It might also be fun to wander through the Viktualienmarkt, a large outdoor food market, or Alois Dallmayr, an amazing gourmet food/candy store.

I also recommend the Hofbrauhaus; it is lots of fun. Just don't mess with the bouncers (I saw what can happen to an overly-agressive tourist last September).

Yes! With a carriage museum to boot.

Nymphenburg Palace is very interesting. I loved the carriage museum (Marstallmuseum Nymphenburg).It's an easy tram ride from the center of town.

Also, almost any city in Germany has it's own website you can just put in the city + .de.

Plan to spend an afternoon at the Residenz, the huge palace of the Wittlesbach (sp?) dynasty. It is near the Marienplatz and close to a pretty good place to eat - the Spatenhaus.

As for hotels, you might check out the Hotel Uhland - a moderate hotel, good location, and gets good reviews.

Definitely the Nymphenburg. And don't miss the Amalienburg pavillion in the Nymphenburg grounds. Spectacular.

The Treasury at the Residenz is also very good.

And yes, yes, the Christmas Markets and the Victualenmarkt.

And the surfers on the Eisbach, if they are there in late November.

Try to avoid being there on a Sunday. We were there on a Saturday and Sunday and all the stores are closed on Sundays. It was very quiet. We stayed at the marriott in Schwabing. It is two short train stops from the marienplatz. The hotel is very nice.
We had a beer at the Hofbrauhaus which happened to be open on the Sunday :) It was more of a novelty that we felt we had to do. My teen had her first taste of beer (she is almost 16) and said it was gross. (Good :) )
Munich is a nice city and I would go back.

I agree with all of the above (except maybe for Hofbrauhaus - touristy over the top) but would definitely add Deutsches Museum - largest museum in the world for technology and science. Fascinating place for anyone's interest.
