2 days in Beaune
 

Could anyone who has visited this town tell me if it would be a good place to spend a day or two without a car? And could you recommend a good place to stay please? Thanking you...

Very nice place to stay for two days without a car. Rent a bike and you can visit many wineries or just bike through gorgeous vineyards. There are a lot of tastings in town, too.

Lots of good restaurants, some good historial sites, very cute.

Definitely, Beaune is a great place to stay for a few days without a car. It's a beautiful town with a few historic sites like the Hospices, and lots of restaurants, wine, shopping. We really liked Hotel de la Poste:

We have stayed twice at the Hotel Le Cedre on the ring road at the edge of town. Very nice place, about 140 Euros as I recall.
Beaune is small place; you can walk to downtown from the hotel in ten minutes and it's a very pleasant walk. In fact you can walk everywhere in Beaune from one end to the other in about 15 minutes. But I recommend leisurely strolls where you get lost, even if all too briefly.

Thankyou so much for your advice, Josephina, Zoe and RJD- will look up hotels and definitely do the bike thing! We are thinking a rail pass would get us most places we wanted to go to - the next place is Troyes, and then Reims. Could I ask whether anyone could advise accommodation (sort of mid-range) in either of these towns, and any must sees?

Beaune is a very nice place for a couple of days, with our without car.

It is about a 20 min walk from Place Monge - 6 min on a bike.

We have never been, but are booked at the Belle Epoque, which is a 3* and paying 82 Euro per night, and seems a good location. The town seems very well recommended.

Another vote for the Hostellerie Le Cedre on the ring road, just a pleasant 5 minute walk from the heart of town. Fabulous dining on the outdoor terrace, really nice ambiance, cozy public rooms filled with fragrant candles that are lighted every evening.

When you have found your hotel and spent some time in Beaune, take a train to go to Dijon (20min trip).
Go to the tourist offivce (the one between the railway station and Place Darcy or the other one in the ducal palace)and ask for the brochure to follow the owl's trail. You'll see all the nicest sites in Dijon.

Everybody seems to forget it has been the capital of the dukes of Burgundy!

If Beaune is your choice, at least visit Dijon. People tend to stay in Beaune, if they have a car. That was what we did when we drove through Burgandy 10 years ago. Since then our mode of travelling is the train. I stayed in Dijon twice (at Coco's flat) and did day trips from there.

You know, I was thinking that Deb might enjoy Dijon but didn't say anything since she seemed to have made her mind up on her itinerary.

Deb, Dijon is another really walkable town from the rail station. Bigger and less "cute" than Beaune, but good place to visit.
