2 days in Athens, how does this plan sound?
Okay, need advice from the Been There, Done Its. We arrive at 7 a.m. on a cruise ship to Athens. Thinking about having George the taxi driver pick us up and give us a half day tour of Athens, and then dropping us at hour hotel, from which we will wander for the rest of the day. The plan is then to have George pick us up the next day after lunch for a half day trip to Sounion, after which he will drop us off at the Hotel Sofitel since we have a 7 a.m. flight out of Athens. Does this sound like a good plan? Any suggestions for variations?

Sounds good to me! Have fun!

enjoy a rooftop restaurant/bar for food or drink once the lights have come on at the acropolis.
unforgettable. the grande bretagne is one of many lovely places. |
Does the Grand Bretagne have a rooftop restaurant overlooking the Acropolis? Think we would need to make reservations in advance, or when we get there?
|
I can recommend Sissifos taverna, which is a rooftop resturant right beneath the Acropolis.

The GB does have such a restaurant. You haven't said what time of year you are going, but if it is in the summer, you should make reservations. Another idea is to go to the GB roof for a drink, then have dinner at a taverna in the Plaka.

We'll be there in September. How far in advance should I make dinner reservations? We'll only be at the GB one night, so I have to make it a good one!

My wife and I spent a day and a half in Athens after a Med. cruise last September - we also stayed at the Sofitel - nice hotel, centrally located.
I our opinion, Athens is about a two-day max visit. I would recommend a walk to the top of the Acropolis, a walk through the Agora, and a stroll through the the Flea Market. We ate twice at a GREAT restaurant called Platanos - very "local" - get the Moussaka. We also had a nice dinner at Daphne's. |
