From Amalfi you can take the short bus ride up to Ravello. Stunning views from Ravello--don't miss the two villas that you can tour--beautiful gardens and views. you can walk down to Amalfi from Ravello but it may be more than you want. From Amalfi you can also walk above the sea to the town of Atrani. Not far. We had a superb lunch there a couple of years ago at A Paranza. Recommended.

I'm considering using these excursions since we are staying at the Palazzo Starace. What do you guys think?

For Pompeii & Vesuvius: http://www.palazzostarace.com/en/pom...suvius-by-boat

I see a couple of reasons I would not do the Amalfi Coast excursion. For one thing it costs 90€ and the ferry is about 15€ each way. So for two people you are talking about a difference of 120€ (even more if you took the bus one way). So it depends on how much 120€ is worth to you. But perhaps an even more important reason is that doing it on your own gives you more freedom. The total length of the excursion says it is 8 hours, about the same as if you took the 10:30 boat to Amalfi and the 16:55 boat back from Positano. Taking the bus between them is easy and cheap (about 3€, here's the schedule - http://www.theamalficoast.net/orari_...imetables.html).

Doing it on your own you get to decide how long you want in each town. Actually what I would do (probably will do when we are there in July) is take the bus (at 8:30) from Sorrento to Amalfi (gets there around 10, so about an hour and a half earlier than the boat), then the bus between Amalfi and Positano, and then the boat back. That way you get to experience the view both from the road and the sea plus you get an extra hour and a half. That might even give you time to get up to Ravello, though that would be pushing it unless you explore towns very quickly. But in general, a little more freedom to do what you want. The last time we were there we did all three towns but we did it on two separate days (bus one day, boat the other). This year we will only probably have one day so will choose only one or two towns and also do a little hiking. Last time we did the walk down from Ravello to Atrani to Amalfi. Actually of all the towns, Atrani is my favorite.

I agree that the excursion is quite a bit more expensive than taking the ferry to and from Amalfi myself but I am confused about the ferry I should take. Would this be my best option? And if so, should I prebook it before I get there?

They are both so easy to do on your own and so much cheaper. Unless you really want to go up Vesuvius (and going by boat one way might be fun), just catch the train yourself in Sorrento and go straight to Pompeii - much easier than you might think.
The ferry is also easy and you have more time to walk around.
You will not be missing out on a thing by doing these trips yourself and will save a bundle of money.
Save all that money for some wonderful food.
