I think your smart shopper had had too many of his own paddos. Not much chance of (yet) another election here for some while I fear.

I spent a few lovely hours in the Troppen Museum, off the beaten path for sure, a few weeks back and just love that place
makes the third world street scenes leap to life
currently at the entrance there is a huge fantastic installation of lights and statues something to do with rain forest art i think - very stupendous
not far from the Troppen Museum i think is the Dutch Resistance Museum documenting resistance and WWII effects on Holland
With everything explained in Dutch and English it made a very very interesting visit - many original documents and photos documenting the real tough times the Dutch suffered through - especially near the end of the war.
