There are dozens of things worth visiting, but for a start, download this map and consider some of the sites shown in the circular icons:

Great sights on my short list for a first visit to Paris would include Sainte Chapelle for the amazing stained glass and the Musee d'Orsay (if you love French impressionist art).

When are you going? I wouldn't travel outside of Paris if you have only 305 days. There is so much to see in Paris. Visit Ste. Chapelle, Musee D'Orsay, Musee Rodin, take an evening boat ride on the Vedettes de Pont Neuf, and, if it is spring walk through the Tuilleries and the Luxembourg Gardens. If you enjoy opera take a tour of the Opera Garnier - the building is amazing.

Hi edb,

With only 3-5 days, I suggest that you stay in Paris.

See the miniguide under "Destinations".

I would also add the Orsay to any "must see" list. On my first visit, I was surprised by the number of paintings, watercolors, etc. that I recognized. I stopped counting around three dozen. There are so many European museums where you are lucky if two or three pieces are familiar. Between Degas, Van Gogh, Renoir, and company, the Orsay will not disappoint.
