Just FYI- I took the train (with FrecciaLink service) Naples-Matera this past May. Easy and relaxing, nothing arduous about it.

Won't comment otherwise on your itinerary, as for the rest of my trip I hired a car and beaches weren't my priority. Visited Santa Maria di Leuca on a day trip from Lecce.
