16 Nights In Europe

Hi everyone,

As new members of the Fodors family, we know we can count on your wonderful advice to help us plan our Summer, 2011 European vacation !!!

We are a family of 4 with two children, ages 14 and 12, who are travelling to Europe in August of this year. We have travelled to Europe the last three summers with our children, and have visited different parts of Italy, France, and Spain. Our children are great travellers and love to see new things as much as we do.

We are landing in Milan and leaving from Venice and we will be renting a car. We want to see Prague and would also like to see Salzburg or Verona, or both. Salzburg is on the way to Pague from Milan (about half-way) while Verona is closer to Milan. We were in Venice for four nights three summers ago and just loved it and are happy to return.

We need a little help figuring out how much time to spend in each city. What we have come up with is the following:

Milan..........4 nights, 3 days
Verona.......1 night, 1 day
Salzburg....3 nights, 2 days
Prague.......4 nights, 3 days
Venice........4 nights, 3 days

Your help is much appreciated.

If you are flying into Milan (and you seem to have booked your tickets) then you are one heck of a way from Salzburg then Prague. After your stay in Milan, you have a journey of around 400 miles to Salzburg by road, taking some six hours. The best way is via Verona and is this where you will spend your one night? You are only a couple of hours from Venice here and around 80 miles.

Salzburg to Prague is then another 250 miles and at least 5 hours. Prague back to Venice is over 500 miles and 10 hours.

If this is all by road, you haven't factored in your travelling time and the fact that two kids, no matter how well behaved, will get horribly bored.

I think you need to cut down on your itinerary and decide where you want to spend time, in the car or on holiday. Allowing for your initial three days in Milan and three days in Venice, you are then going to do 1200 miles in 6 days. Even if you take trains, this is IMHO too ambitious.

I agree with Lifeman. If you really want to see Prague, I would consider flying from Milan and driving back to Venice. It would save you several days of driving. If you have not purchased your airline tickts, consider flying to Prague and driving back to Italy so you don't have to drive both directions. You can see Verona as a day trip from Venice.

Hi AB,

If I wanted to visit Prague, Salzburg and Venice I would fly into Prague and out of Venice, taking trains between cities.

However,

Why do you want to spend 4 nights in Milan? To me, that is two too many.

Since you will have a car, why not add 2 nights to Salzburg and visit the Salzkammergut region? I suggest getting the Salzburg Card
(http://www2.salzburg.info/de/sehensw...card/index.htm)

Is there a reason for skipping Vienna?

You can visit Verona as a daytrip from Venice. See www.trenitalia.com

Enjoy your visit.

Hi,

We really do enjoy driving throughout Europe. We have driven between Rome and Lecce, Rome and Venice, Paris and Barcelona, among other car trips we have taken and just love seeing the various country sides, even from the highways. Although it takes a few hours more than flying between cities, the hassle of getting to and in and out of airports and the waiting times make the time differences small.

Using Via Michelin, the best way to get from Milan to Salzburg passes through Verona, so we can spend one night there instead of taking a day off of Venice, which would require getting out of the city and getting a car, and then getting back to the hotel.

Here is an updated itinerary:

Milan................3 nights
Verona..............1 night (on the way to Salzburg)
Salzburg............2 nights
Prague...............4 nights
Cesky Krumlov...1 night (on the way to Venice)
Venice................4 nights

Total...................15 nights (we have 16 nights available).

We have an extra night to place and we do not know where to place it. Your recommendations are very appreciated.

Let us know what you all think.

Thanks for all of your help.
