If you had 14 days to spend in europe where would you go? I love history and museums but that doesn't help much does it? The only place I've ever been in Europe is London. Would you really explore one city? Which side trips? I just can't decide, so how about you guys?

That means a city - pick one that interests you. Berlin is fascinating with its mix of old (Pergamon etc.) and cutting-edge new (design, fashion, techno, architecture, art...) and it's a great music city if you're into classical. Lots of daytrips. Maybe fly to Berlin, then take the train to Prague for a few days there and fly home from Prague.

But at that time of the year many many cities would be great. If the Christmas-y thing like Christkindl markets and that sort of thing means something to you, then maybe Munich with its surroundings should be considered. An overnight in Salzburg for its winter wonderland, or to Innsbruck for ditto - it's all in reach.

That's just two - then there's always Paris, don't get me started...

At that time of year, I'd stay south for warmth. And I'd stick with large cities so there are lots of indoor activities in case of bad weather (especially rain). Two places with a week in each would be nice... You could even squeeze in 3 cities if you'd like. Rome for sure. Maybe pair that with Florence or Athens. Of course, Paris is fabulous and a great place for a first-timer too, but expect it to be colder.

Agree that cold versus moderate is a key question.

I think Berlin and Prague with a couple of day trips is a great idea - but it will be real winter, possibly lots of snow and you need to be prepared.

If you want more moderate temps head for italy or southern Spain - but be aware that even in Florence and Rome you can get snow in the winter - but much less likely and probably only a little. More likely to get highs of about 50 or so.

For history and museums (at anytime of the year but especially in the winter) it's hard to beat Rome. I'd book five or six nites in Rome, giving you four full days there plus a day for a day trip, and then probably move to Sorrento or somewhere else in that area so you could see Pompeii, Herculaneum, and the National Archaeological and Capodimonte Museums in Naples. Ostia Antica is a good day-trip from Rome, as is Hadrian's Villa.

In fourteen days, you could also do the big three cities in Italy: Venice, Florence, Rome. Weather probably will not be wonderful but it would almost certainly be better than in Berlin or Prague.
