If you are going in Dec. you should look into the Christmas markets.

I would say definitely the blackforest area, then over to the castles. Garmisch is a great area with lots to see and do, and with a 4 year old I would definately suggest LEGOLAND. We were just there with our 4 and 6 year olds ( and my 38 year old "KID" husband who is a LEGO fanatic) and we had a BLAST. Legoland is near ULM. Go to www.legoland.de for info. See the Rick Steve's Germany info for good museums in Black forest I would definitely recommend the one in Gutach--it is an open-air museum of the blackforest traditions and culture. Have a wonderful trip. (I've been to the castles in discussion twice-once on our own, and once with family--just so you know your child WILL be bored with the tour--ours were, but they loved the horse carriage ride.) Typical German B&B breakfast will have fresh-baked bread rolls with butter and jam, coldcuts of various sausages, cheese, soft-boiled eggs, coffee.
