After what I am sure will be a tiring visit to Dublin, Meath, Powerscourt and Glendalough, (4 days and we aren't as young as we once were) we would like a quiet town with some decent tourist facilities before heading to the Irish Heritage Park near Wexford and the Kilkenny, Cashel, Cahir section. Any suggestions?

I like Wicklow Town. It's not a tourist mecca, but a pleasant enough coastal town. You might find the old Gaol an interesting visit (one of my ancestors was incarcerated there for a week in the middle of the 19th century). See: http://visitwicklow.ie/towns-villages/wicklow-town/

I don't particularly the other towns and villages in that area. Many have become dormitory suburbs for Dublin.

My own preference, when staying in that general area, is Woodenbridge, but it doesn't meet your brief. It's fairly rural (and scenic).

Good man Padraig, Gramps had accommodation in Wicklow for a while in the early 20s

Wicklow used to be the town we stayed if sailing out from Dun Laohaire its a nice little place with a couple of good B&B's and a decent Hotel.. I believe the Bridge Tavern has the craic of the old place and also has decent accommodation now it has been revamped.

We also like Bray and the Promenade Hotel, Victorian built so not your squeaky clean clinical box of modern hotels but it is clean and comfortable with the front rooms looking out into Dublin Bay. good breakfasts and the restaurant food is good for an evening meal.

Thank you, both. I had looked at Enniscorthy, so was glad to have that guess confirmed. Appreciate the other tips and will have a look. Especially appreciate the time you took to add the links, Padraig. Actually Woodenbridge might do because quiet should have been written in capital letters. Looks like there are some nice hotels there for our dates.

If you are tempted by Woodenbridge, this is where we stay: http://www.woodenbridgehotel.com/. Accommodation is fairly standard 3-star; food is good, but not quite fine dining; price is modest; setting is beautiful. It's close to Avoca, the Ballykissangel village. I don't know if that interests you.

On Wicklow town: The Grand Hotel had a run of bad form a small number of years ago, and attracted a lot of poor reviews. I don't know what it's like currently. Just outside the town you have Tinakilly House, somewhat further up the scale (and priced accordingly): http://www.tinakilly.ie/

I have never stayed in Enniscorthy. Hersalf has used the Riverside Park, and says it's okay, but not memorably good. Great location, though. http://www.riversideparkhotel.com/index.html.
