Norway is very easy to drive around. Don't stay in Bergen and take day trips, stay in the small towns. We drove from Bergen to Balestrand and stayed there. Absolutely gorgeous. Then we drove along the fjord over towards Luster and stayed at a fabulous B&B called Nes Gard. The drive was beautiful and the views from Nes Gard were unbelievable. If you stay there get the half board they have a great dinner and there are no other restaurants nearby. We took a day trip to a glacier from there which was also great. Norway has beauty everywhere. We then took the snow road over to Flam. I am not sure that will be open in May. If it is it was a great drive. We ended up taking the ferry from Flam, but to be honest we saw much more driving than we did on the ferry. If we had had more time we would have driven up to Geiranger. Next time I guess.
Rent a car and drive around. Nice people and indescribable scenery! |
Thanks so much Sberg. This is very helpful. What month were you there? I will research car rentals tonight.

We were there in August and we saw snow on the mountains. I bet there would be a lot in May. You would definitely need to check the forecasts . I don't think the snow road opens until June. I got some great tips from the fodorites from Norway. Dyoll was a great help in my planning.
We tried to stay away from Norway in a nutshell ( too many people). We did not take the train to Myrdal and I don't feel like we were deprived at all. We only took the ferry from Flam as there had been a fire in the tunnel and there was no way to drive around. People rave about that ferry, but again we saw much more beautiful scenery driving. The roads are narrow but very good. We had no issues. The rental car had a device for the few times we needed it for tolls. The only trouble we had was finding the rental car return when we got back to Bergen! We loved the area around Nes Gard and you could easily drive to Geiranger from there and spend a few days. Hope you have a great trip! |
Maybe you should take the train from Oslo to Bergen ( it is supposed to be fantastic), spend a few days then rent a car and drive around and return the car in Oslo. As long as you are returning it in Norway the drop fee shouldn't be too bad. Or return the car back to Bergen if it is much cheaper and fly back to Oslo. We got a flight from Bergen to Stockholm on Norwegian for $69.00 so I imagine they have similar fares to Oslo.

Thanks Sberg. Super helpful. I had not heard of Nes Gard. I like the idea of getting the rental car in Oslo or Bergen and driving around. I will see if I can get some advice about the roads at that time of year. Now I need to decide if I want to take the Hurtigruten for a few days too.

Thanks Dyoll. If you have any other suggestions, I would greatly appreciate your input. Sberg said you were very helpful with their trip.
