12 days between Crete, Santorini and Mykonos

Hello Everyone,

My girlfriend and I will be spending 15 days in Greece (3 days in Athens, and we want to split the rest between Crete, Santorini and Mykonos). We were wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to how to split up our 12 days between each island, and if anyone has any interesting tips for first time Greece travellers.

We land in Heraklion, and we will be renting a car. We were planning on driving straight to my grandmother's old town (Rethymno) and staying there for one night, then driving to Chania and staying there three nights (apparently Chania has the best beaches... Any suggestions?), then back to Heraklion for two nights. Then we would take a ferry to Santorini for three nights, then ferry to Mykonos for two nights, then fly back home the next day.

Is this doable? Are we devoting enough time to Crete? Any suggestions for beautiful historical sites in Crete? Are two days in Mykonos enough? Should we stay in Firá or Oía in Santorini?

Thank you so much! I hope to hear from you!

You are certainly correct to allow more time for Crete than for the other islands. Are two days in Mykonos enough? If they are two full days and not days of arrival or departure, you could spend one day on a beach and another visiting Delos (which would leave you time to explore Mykonos Town in the afternoon). Note that Delos is closed Mondays. Obviously the more time on an island the better, but you have to work with what is available.

I agree three days in Athens is about right, but save them for the end of your trip rather than the beginning. That way you have a built-in cushion in case weather or industrial action delays your return to the mainland.

I would do the following:Take one night from Heraklion and add it to Chania and take a night from Santorini and add it to Mykonos. I would chose Oia over Fira.

Hi eagermike93,
You are trying to cover a large amount of space in your time, but since you are flying straight to Crete, it may work. I second the suggestion to reduce your stay in Heraklion to one night - it's not a very pretty city and the big attraction is nearby Knossos which you could still visit if you plan to make a circuit there on your way. Use the extra night in Chania or Mykonos. And I would keep the three nights in Santorini. You asked if 2 days in Mykonos is enough - that depends if you have 2 full days or if you are counting travel days. I think you should add the day there.

I agree with the comments made. If you are travelling off season to Santorini, you may prefer Thira to Oia where there is more happening. If you are travelling in July or Aug. then Oia may be a nicer option. Re: beaches - in Chania town beaches were not a draw. The best beaches were a day trip away. Rethymno I recall, having a nice in town beach. You may even want to consider 2 nights there given your connection to the past. It is a really nice location.

Any particular reason that you are resurrecting years old threads between this one and the Rome vs. Sicily one?
