12 days- around London

My wife and I are planning a 12 day trip flying into London. We don't want to stay in London for the whole time. Maybe 4 or 5 nights. We want to see some of the surrounding areas- Bath, Stonehenge, Stratford- upon-Avon etc. We love history. We are on a bit of a budget. Oh yea, with regards to the budget, trains or car rental?

I don't think train vs. car rental is a budget question, it's more a question of what's most convenient for how you want to do your holiday.

If you want leave London for 7 or 8 days and wander around to the kind of places you mentioned, you should rent a car. If you want to stay in London and take a number of separate day trips to these kind of places, you are better off taking the train (and an occasional bus).

Yes, a rental car is the way to go outside of London. It's much more difficult (but not impossible) to plan things around bus and train schedules - especially in smaller towns.

We usually find the best rates at www.autoeurope.com.

Cordoba,
We have done that same trip several times and have used a car every time. We usually don't care where we sleep and end up staying at Travelodges. They are similar to Motel 6 and most times if you go far enough in advance you can get rooms for 19gbp, but they do go up to 54gbp. They are not quaint and you will have to drive to a pub for good food but they are clean and have free parking. Just go to the Travelodge web site.

Cheers

We spent two weeks in England and Wales last May. If you click on my screen name, you can find my trip report.

We spent most nights in hostels, with two nights in a Travelodge in Stroud, in the southern Cotswolds.

We rented a car through AutoEurope.
