12 Day Travel Itinerary Ideas

Hello Everyone,

New to this forum, so take it easy on me pleeeeease! xx

So, my birthday's coming up and I'm turning a whole 20 years old haha and I'm looking to travel through Europe/Asia Minor for just under two weeks to celebrate. This would be during the first half of June, which I think is perfect weatherwise for this region, not blisteringly hot just yet, but pleasant weather and kids still in school, hopefully minimising the crowds if only slightly. I'm going with my boyfriend and maybe a few friends depending on final cost (can't be doing anything too lavish or Scandinavian because I am still very firmly on a student budget) and would like to hear some ideas for ideal travel itinerary considering my brain is massively overwhelmed by all the options available. Can fly out of any London airport or Birmingham to the Continent for convenience. Below are the places my boyfriend and I have already been because we want something new and below that the places we're most interested in. Nothing is a must-have and we are more keen on an epic holiday than ticking off certain places.

Where we've been:
1. Barcelona, Spain
2. Faro, Portugal and some day trips in the Algarve
3. Milan and Cinque Terre, Italy
5. Stockholm, Sweden
6. Oslo and the Nordmarka, Norway
7. Paris, St. Tropez and Lyon, France
8. Budapest, Hungary
9. Athens, Meteora, Thessaloniki and Santorini, Greece
10. Zagreb, Croatia
11. Ljubljana, Slovenia
12. Geneva, Switzerland
13. Berlin and Hamburg, Germany
14. Dublin, Ireland

We know it's a lot already on the list, but there is so much more of Europe to see, and we absolutely do not mind going back to the same countries for different cities and different experiences.

Top Points of Interest:
1. Venice, Italy
2. Rome, Italy
3. Madrid, Spain
4. Lisbon, Portugal
5. Istanbul, Turkey***
6. Prague, Czech Republic
7. Warsaw, Krakow, Gdinsk
6. General Iceland
7. SOMEWHERE HOT HOT HOT, and by that I mean beachy, this woman needs a tan.
8. The boyfriend has never been to the South of France, while I've got family there and spent a lot of summers there.
9. Amsterdam, Netherlands
10. Bruges, Belgium
11. Adriatic Coast

The most important requirements are a cultural city, something archaeological because the boyfriend's degree is in History and Archaeology, somewhere beachy but not exceptionally crowded with tourists and great food! Trains, planes and automobiles are also all valid travel options for us.

Any help, advice and/or insight would be massively appreciated folks. Go crazy with the ideas!
THANK YOU XX

Greece and/or Croatia for 12 days for the tan.

chica_wingin_it Apr 14th, 2018 03:59 AM

Thanks for your reply! I was thinking more of 3-4 places but Greece and Croatia are great shouts. I've already been to a fair few places in Greece so anywhere in particular you'd recommend?

StCirq Apr 14th, 2018 04:05 AM

Morocco

Huggy Apr 14th, 2018 04:10 AM

Athens for history and architecture and one of the islands for the beach. (Sifnos was wonderful.)

Envierges Apr 14th, 2018 05:09 AM

Sicily for 12 days has it all. See if you could get to some of the islands too. Lipari, Stromboli

PalenQ Apr 14th, 2018 05:26 AM

Trains are great and a good way to get around everywhere - check out various youth railpasses for those under 28 - good rail sources and where to go by trains - www.ricksteves.com; www.seat61.com and BETS-European Rail Experts.

2 weeks means about 4-5 bases max IMO.

thursdaysd Apr 14th, 2018 05:30 AM

Sicily can easily take three weeks, never mind two. Or Nice as a base for the south of France, and then maybe Annecy/Chamonix or the Italian lakes.

The OP doesn't have two weeks. It's 12 days. IMO, that's not enough time for 3, 4 or 5 destinations unless they are all in the same area, not different countries.

I'd pick Sicily for the direct flights from London, weather, budget, history, architecture and great food. Renting a car could be expensive because of the under-age surcharge (unless your BF is over 25), but there is reasonably good public transportation if you do your homework in selecting your lodging location and sights you want to see. Obviously, if you wanted to see all of Sicily you would need more time, but that could be said about almost anywhere. Don't let that dissuade you from going there.

Or Greece if you can structure an itinerary with direct flights and ferry times that maximize your time. For example, a ferry departure at noon puts a hole in the middle of the day, impacting how much time you have for sightseeing in the morning and afternoon.

Pack light if you want to stay in multiple destinations.

I've been to Greece 3 times & I still want to go back. So much to see
Have fun & happy birthday

I would try to focus your wish list first. That will make planning a lot easier. With only 12 days and if you want HOT HOT HOT and a beach sunny enough to work on a tan inJune... cross Amsterdam and Bruges and Iceland off the list (for example).

What about in Italy or Spain combining 5 days in a city then a week at a coastal/beach resort town?

Leely2 Apr 14th, 2018 03:40 PM

I'd choose Sicily. It's a fantastic destination and should tick all your boxes (beaches, ancient history/archaeology, plenty of more recent history and points of cultural interest, wonderful food). It is large, though, with much to see, so you will need to be selective.

Boyfriend's interests: history & archeology (St. Remy for him, near Roman ruins)
Girlfriend's interest: tanning
Answer: incompatible

kja Apr 14th, 2018 07:57 PM

You've already gotten some great input about various places where you can combine these interests. I'll add
Athens / Nafplio,
Naples and either Capri or Ishia,
Crete, and
Istanbul / Antalya …

Personally, I’d give Sicily a pass this time – as others have noted, it is a bit much for the time you have, and the beaches aren’t all that close to the best ruins.

And I’d skip Croatia this time – it has some very interesting ruins, but they are scattered and not necessarily convenient to the beaches.

But I don't think you'd go wrong with any of these places. JMO.

kja Apr 14th, 2018 11:27 PM

P.S. Or consider locations outside Europe, like the Yucatan.

Tulips Apr 15th, 2018 04:05 AM

We spend some time near Trieste, Italy, last year. Lots to see and do, and even early July it was not busy at all.
Plenty of history and archeology in the area (check out Aquileia and Castello di Miramare for starters) and you can combine this with Venice and some beach time in Croatia.

neckervd Apr 15th, 2018 04:33 AM

The Turkish Mediterranean coast for the tan plus History and History and History.....................

suze Apr 15th, 2018 08:48 AM

Malta?

annhig Apr 15th, 2018 09:16 AM

Either Turkey, depending on how risk averse you are, or Greek Island hopping. In fact you could spend your whole 12 days on Crete and get everything you want there - wonderful beaches, hot weather, cheap food, public transport by bus, and wonderful archeological sites at Knossos, Phaestus, and lots more. Here's quite a comprehensive list:

Archaeological Sites and Museums in Crete

PalenQ Apr 15th, 2018 03:48 PM

Most 20 yr olds would find flying into or out of Amsterdam and spending a few days in this multi-faceted city with architecture, world-class museums and a notoriously eclectic nightlife. Kind of party-central for young Europeans especially good if looking for nightlife. Fly out to wherever from there or say take train Belgium - Bruges or Germany, etc.

chicago2europe Apr 15th, 2018 04:23 PM

You mention the south of France, which you know well, but what about Corsica? It's fairly expensive because it's a part of France, but it's truly one of Europe's underrated gems. It has beaches, mountains, wonderfully authentic villages, great food throughout, and a unique blend of cultures. Best of all, it comes in a small, easily accessible package.

Peter_S_Aus Apr 15th, 2018 09:27 PM

You might open up your agenda should you opt for a spray tan.

Okay ladies and gentlemen, just to clarify, my primary interest is not tanning haha. I was just suggesting the focus for my boyfriend especially on the archaeological side of things because that was what his degree was in but as a (26 year old for reference regarding renting a car in Sicily) project manager now, he doesn't get much of it in his day-to-day life. The beach was just considered as a change from the grey and wet world of the West Midlands and the city breaks we more regularly take xx

But thanks all of you for your suggestions! Some of them are really incredible ideas and have put places like Corsica, Sicily and Malta and particularly Turkey more securely onto the map for us in terms of top options. You've all been really helpful and have given us plenty to think about - I think the plan now is we're going to go down the route suggested of 5-6 days in one or two cities, and 6 days probably renting a car somewhere a little bit warmer. And to minimise the time lost to flights or trains between them, are considering adding an extra day in the mix to dedicate to the physical act of travelling.

Thank you again, y'all have been fantastic and I'll let you know the final decision when it's been booked.

Good luck and smooth sailing in all your future travels and endeavours!!!

IMDonehere Apr 17th, 2018 01:33 AM

Can you get a tan, when you get back to the States? Just remember on a student budget every change of town costs money. We have been to every place on your points of interests. They all have their charms, but I never thought of improving my tan in Warsaw or Krakow.

Tulips Apr 17th, 2018 03:39 AM

The OP doesn't live in the US, IMDonehere. I can totally understand the desire for a few days on a beach if you live in the West Midlands.

thursdaysd Apr 17th, 2018 05:41 AM

@Tulips - so long as it's not a British beach, lol. (I grew up in England, I remember pebbles and wind breaks....)

annhig Apr 17th, 2018 09:20 AM

thursdaysd - did you never make it to the Isle of Wight or Croyde? Fabulous sandy beaches there, though for some reason my parents preferred Sidmouth which is definitely pebbly. And I did once get sunburnt on the beach at Nairn which is near Inverness. [Scotland for those who are wondering].

Tulips Apr 17th, 2018 09:44 AM

Am getting a tan in my own garden, in Belgium, in the middle of April. It's a miracle!

thursdaysd Apr 17th, 2018 09:50 AM

@annhig - yes, we spent holidays on the IOW when I was a teen, but I have more vivid memories of shivering in the wind. Of course, the last time I was in the UK, in 2016, there was a whole lot more sunshine than I expected, so I guess things have improved with global warming (although I was just hearing that the Gulf Stream may be trending west)..

chica_wingin_it Apr 17th, 2018 11:46 AM

Exactly @Tulips - I am entirely landlocked atm and don't even have beaches like Cleethorpes anywhere near me to visit like I could growing up in Lincolnshire haha!

And tanning @IMDonehere was less about wanting a laze in the sun that it was more of a throw away comment about wanting to go somewhere a little bit warmer than its been here - although England is getting sunnier thankfully!

PalenQ Apr 17th, 2018 12:56 PM

Blackpool?

annhig Apr 17th, 2018 01:24 PM

no tans to be had here, Tulips, but a heat wave is supposed to hit some of the UK tomorrow, mainly in the SE [you might know].

The weather is due to improve here too though not enough for sunbathing.

Chica-wingin-it - living in Cornwall I well understand the lure of sunshine, though when we do get it, it's glorious.

5alive Apr 18th, 2018 09:31 PM

Should you choose Sicily, consider a day or two in Rome. Ostia Antica is fabulous.

PalenQ Apr 19th, 2018 11:35 AM

Cornwall I though got the most sunshine in U.K.?

annhig Apr 21st, 2018 10:45 AM

no Pal, not by a long chalk:

https://www.makeurmove.co.uk/article....gHuRnXdR.dpbs

Bognor Regis, Hastings, and Eastbourne take the 3 top spots, [all along the south coast of England] followed by Tenby [south Wales] and Bristol, though I have to say that came as a bit of a surprise as in the 3 years I spent there as a student, it seemed to rain most of the time.

We have a maritime climate so lower temps in summer, higher in Winter with more rain, whereas the eastern side of the country has a more continental climate with more sun and hotter temps in summer - for example, over the last few days, although it's been warm here, in London and the SE it's been sweltering. Furthermore the heat wave is due to continue there tomorrow whereas here, we're going to be back to fog and rain again.
