11 days in Italy- timing/location help needed
Hello
My mom and I are going to Italy in April 09. We are starting our trip in Prague, then flying to Rome on a Tuesday... we fly out of Milan the next Fri, making it about 10 or 11 days in Italy. We are thinking of visiting Rome, Florence/Tuscany, Cinque Terra, and maybe a night in Milan on our way out. Is this doable? Could we add in Venice or any of the Lakes, or is that just too much? Also, any thoughts on intinerary and number of nights in each location would be helpful. Thanks!

Just a quick reality check for you:
Arriving in Rome on Tuesday - you'll only have 1/2 day free that day, assuming you arrive mid-morning, then travel to hotel, check-in etc.
Flying out of Milan the next Friday, so assuming you'll arrive in Milan the day before on Thursday.
In reality, you'll only have 8.5 days total, and that's NOT even enough for Rome, Florence/Tuscany AND Cinque Terra.
Rome itself deserve at least 4 days or more, so you'll only have 4 days left for the rest of the trip. Traveling from one city to another easily takes up 1/2 day.
Decide which cities/regions you really want to visit and go from there. Trying to visit too many places on a short trip will leave you with memories of train stations only.

It kind of depends on what you like to do, and if you are small town or large city kind of people.
I would stay 5 nights Rome (Tues-Saturday) and leave early Sunday for Tuscany and stay there 4 nights (Sunday - Wednesday), then Thursday night in/around Milan. My preference is small towns, so I would not stay in Florence but maybe day trip there. If you prefer Florence, stay there and take a day trip into Tuscany.
If you really want to see the Cinque Terre, I would steal a night from Rome and night from Tuscany, and do 4 Rome, 3 Tuscany, 2 Cinque Terre and 1 Milan. Rent a car after Rome and turn it in on your way to the Cinque Terre.

I agree with yk's advice. Your preliminary itinerary will have you doing "drive by" visits as opposed to be able to truly get a flavor for any one place.
Stay 4 nights in Rome and plan 2 nights in Milan on the way home. IMO, Milan has a lot to offer and you could easily make a trip to Como/Bellagio on the second morning, getting a nice taste of the lakes.
In between Rome and Milan, spend 4 nights in Florence, day tripping into the countryside to get a taste of the Tuscan landscape.
I would not try to squeeze in Venice this trip as it is too far north to make sense with your flight plans, IMO.
If you are going around Easter, expect big crowds and high prices and book hotels early.

The lakes and Venice are not doable if you are doing Rome, Florence, CT and Milan.
3 nights Rome, 3 nights Florence, 2 nights CT, and 2 nights Milan.
Milan is a GREAT city. Even though no one talks about it it is.
Personally, I'd skip the CT this trip and do 2 nights in Parma. See the video here:
