A Taste of Battle, maybe? We were actually in the town briefly on a quick daytrip from Windsor while visiting friends back in 2009. The name was unique and I took a picture.
|
I'm in. It's just after 5 a.m. and we'll set off for the train shortly. Should be a really nice, albeit long, day.
Patrick, did you decide to go? |
Completely forgot! Ah well, next year.
|
The weather's looking good for it, at least.
|
Well, we survived and thrived actually. True, it was a long day but well worth it. The weather was just about perfect and we learned a lot.
It was our first re-enactment of any kind. We might just have to find another one (hopefully closer!). Some additional thoughts and photos (not the best) if anyone is still reading. http://ukfrey.blogspot.com/2011/10/b...n-to-1066.html |
nice blog and pics, indy_dad.
glad all the arrangements worked out - well, sort of. there was an interesting item on the radio the other day about the battle itself - I didn't hear much but did catch the description of where Harold was killed. According to the programme he was more or less hacked to death, and William was apparently furious and banished the hackee from his presence. was there any mention of that in the re-enactment? |
Thanks, Annhig. The main thing was getting an arrow to the eye, which I guess is on the Bayeux Tapestry. I think I read that there was some further hacking on the way down or after the fact. No mention of banishment, etc.
The commentator did the "oh no, Harold's been shot in the eye" bit and commented afterwards that he usually gets asked why he is surprised every year. :D |
it was the hacking off of his thigh that i particularly noted.
i don't think that can have helped. |
Took a London Walks Explorer Day to Battle and Rye a few years ago and would highly recommend it. We traveled from London to Battle by train, toured the battlefield and Abbey, then took a privite mini-coach to Rye, taking the scenic route through thatched cottage towns.
It cost £35 but was well worth it for the history and the tours. |
