Yea we circled the entire continent of Europe 1 and a half times in 101 days. I think too many Americans (like myself) try and do too much when we go to Europe because you never really know when or if you will ever come back.

On the other hand, I don't regret a thing. Of course next time I will definitely be seeing fewer places for longer periods of time. I'll also be couchsurfing more... but that's another story :)

tyler, in which hostel did you stay in Venice, and how much per night? did it have an AC for summer days? NICE PICTURES!

We stayed in a place that had a PERFECT location, but was honestly quite crappy. I have a picture of our room here:

I don't think it had air conditioning but thankfully it wasn't all that warm when we were there. We paid 20 Euro per night each which in Venice is quite affordable for a room in the city. You can find much nicer places just outside of the city but then you have to take shuttles into the city (I don't recommend that). Check on www.hostelworld.com and BOOK EARLY. My number one advice for Venice is to book everything weeks in advance. I know that sucks for spontaneous travel (which is more fun), but in some cases and cities it's almost necessary unless you want to overpay for a dive...

I spent a great deal of time in Latvia but other than that I spent about 2-3 nights in most places. I know for most travelers seeing so many places in one trip can seem ludacris but for my personal style of travel I like to keep moving. I don't really get worn out by travel. After 2-3 nights in a place I'm generally ready to keep moving. 5 nights in Bergen Norway became a bore and honestly I could have done all I wanted to do in Bled Slovenia in one full day. However some places like Istanbul Turkey could have easily absorbed a full week. It really depends on your location and your goals.

from a purely aesthetic perspective (architecture, setting, urban planning, etc., etc.), which city/cities did you think were most impressive?

The places I would go back to or the places I would skip next time? Interesting question...


I'm actually glad I saw all the places I saw so I wouldn't want to change anything... even the negatives... but if I was going next month for example I would definitely make a shorter list.

Places I would go back to:
Well I would fly into Frankfurt instead of London, that's for sure... I can't afford London trasportation costs haha... I would travel around Germany, Switzerland, Austria, head east to Prague, Poland and probably fly down to Slovenia then down to Croatia, spend some time in Bosnia and then down to Istanbul and spend a good week or two on the beaches of Western Turkey and I REALLY want to do one of those 3 night sail boat trips in Turkey that everyone raves about who has done one. I would finish up in Greece or perhaps head to Venice for a flight back to the states. In my mind that would be a perfect, rather short trip.

No where really stands out as a "never going to return" location for me... I always just chalk up my bad experiences to not doing it right or not meeting the right people. I truely believe that you can have fun anywhere... Often it's not about the location but more about the people you meet along the way.

One city really jumps out to me... Prague

Public transportation is SIMPLE and cheap and the gothic arctitecture there is a MUST SEE in my mind. Their location on the Vltava is great as well. I think that covers urban planning, architecture and setting haha. It's kind of a bleak, urban setting with few trees and cheery people (and lots of tourists), but it really is a must see.

Vienna is beautiful as well and I'm surprised more people don't go there. Of course you really have to be a music/art fan (which I'm mildy interested in) to truely appreciate it.


Dubrovnik in my mind has the best setting. The city in those white walls located on the southernmost tip of Croatia is unbelievably beautiful.

Just great photo's, I have only looked at Norway so far cause we are going there next year.
Which hostel did you stay in in Bergen? We are going on the Coastal Voyage and need a room the day we get back to Bergen, I have been looking at the hostels because the price is far better than any type of accommodation.

We are 50ish so we are looking at a double room not a dormitory!!!!! The hostels in Norway seem to get good reviews.

On that exact property you can find Jacob's apartments as well which you might like better. I think the two places are probably owned by the same people. I found their website located here:

I really did love the Dorm.No but of course it is a dormitory style room. There were a couple of people there in their 50's who actually fit in fairly well. I know this is kind of stereotyping people, but I found that the type of traveler who makes it all the way up to Bergen Norway are going to be of a slightly different breed than the party animals that go to Amsterdam/Berlin... so the Dorms might not be as scary as you think. No one can afford to get drunk in Norway haha :)

At least give Jacob's Apartments a look. They have 2 person places.

Tyler - I cant figure out who's who - mind telling us about yourselves? Were there two people or more? Family, couple? I am just curious as your trip is very interesting and seeing pictures of it sparked my interest.
