1000 places to see before you die: what are yours?

I just finished perusing a lovely little book entitled, 1000 Places to See Before You Die ( a bit morbid thought, but thought provoking!)So I was wondering:

1. What places have you yet to see, that you must ,and why?

2. What places have you been to that you are REALLY, REALLY glad that you did?

Mine:

Places yet to see and why:

Israel: Because I'm Jewish and want to see where relatives emigrated to and to pray at the Wailing Wall. Maybe someday I'll feel comfortable enough to go. Would like to see for myself the relationship between Jews and Arabs and see some friendships there, because I know they exist.

A Luxury Game Reserve in South Africa: Had friends who loved it and would not mind some pampering in a far off place.

Bali: My stepson travels all over the world for his business, but he always comes back to Bali as one of his favorties. Trust him completely.

Place I've Been That I'm Really Glad I saw:

I've seen so much that I am grateful for the chance to travel. Hard to narrow, but here are a just a very few.

Hungary: Where my mothers side is from so now I understand some of the family traits. Loved Budapest.

Paris: Cuz it's Paris!!The city that reactivates so many, yet produces such allure. A very special friend I met there remains a good friend today. It was one of my first European experiences many years ago.

Monaco: Just becasue I could close my eyes and imagine Princess Grace living there and that holds some strange allure for me. Had the best meal of my life there at Louis XV restaurant in the Hotel De Paris.

In the US: Memphis, TN for the Civil Rights Museum that is built into the remains of the Lorraine Motel, the site of the Dr.Martin Luther King assasination. It was a time in history that is forever burned into my memory as a child of the 60's. I got to see the actual two rooms occupied by Dr. King and his group, left untouched ( glassed in now)from that awful day in 1968.

what's yours?

I want to go to Eastern Europe- Warsaw, Prague etc.
Also Petra in Jordan.
Turkey.

I have been to Israel 3x and am REALLY glad that I did when it was still ok to drive to the West Bank, places like Jenin and Jerico. Also when it was safe to travel on the busses.
I WILL return, I won't be dictated to by terrorists but I will just have to travel a different way, sheruts maybe.

I have in the back of my mind I want to watch the sun rise from the top of Mount Fuji.

But to be honest, if I died tomorrow I feel I've seen my share of the world's greatest and most beautiful spots.

I'm grateful for being able to go everywhere I have so far...

But I'm nowhere near 1000, so...

A Tsechu in Bhutan's Bumthang valley
Transylvania, Sighisoara in particular + Bucovina
Italy - all of it
Berchtesgaden
Serengeti
Zanzibar
Easter Island
The Pyramids and Luxor
Potala
Fez
Patagonia
Angkor
Luang Phrabang
Agra & Varanasi
Istanbul & Cappadocia
Rio
Galapagos
Berner Oberland
Anywhere the Northern Lights are clear
Guilin
Shikoko, Japan
Komodo Dragons in the wild
Everest

I'm never likely to get to all of these places, but actually writing out a list is kind of fun. Worse, I could have added places forever.

I rather agree with Patrick/ I have already been lucky to have seen more than my share. Events are more important to me now than places - - daughters' weddings, each of their names on the door at the place they work, gtandchildren's faces, if I should be so lucky.

Still, I will play along.

To see:

Hawaii
Victoria Falls
Sicily
St. Petersburg
Hong Kong
Key West
Maritime Canada
Somewhere really good in Central America
Madagascar (but so far to travel)
Coast(s) of Ireland and/or SW England, preferably from a small aircraft

Glad to have seen:

The Vatican, specifically St. Peter's
Venice
Burg Eltz
Amsterdam
the Queyras
Mont St Michel
Versailles
Schloss Linderhof
the Alhambra
Hearst Castle
Biltmore Estate
Arches and Canyonlands NP (air tour)
Class 5 rapids, California and WV
Aspen
"Shaker village", KY (Pleasant Hill?)
The view from WOW with my grandmother, in 1999

Best wishes,

Rex

I just purchased that book for Christmas! Will start reading next week on vacation.

Places I must see:
1. Egypt. If there is such a thing as past lives I was definitely an Egyptain. I love everything about Egypt's history.
2. Tahiti. Want to stay in an overwater bungalow
3. The French countryside - loved the background in the movie "French Kiss"
4. Savannah, Georgia. Want to see the deep south where everything is genteel.
5. A cruise to Alaska and the Galapagos for it's beauty.
6. Northern Ireland. Did the south, but feel like I missed something.

Places I'm so glad I saw:
All of England
New York
DC
Venice & Rome & Tuscany
Miami because of it's fun energy
Ireland because it's enchanted
Hampton Court Palace gardens where I can spend all day
The Llouvre

Rex, your sweet message put a lump in my throat! What lucky daughters you have!

Now, about this book, I am SO sorry to say that I gave it to my father for Christmas and the next day he told me that he is ill. So, I feel AWFUL about giving him a book with such a negative title, in this case. On the brighter side, after his surgery he is going to choose one of the places and we are meeting there hopefully this spring!

To see:
Finland (and my maternal grandfather's village)
The Pyramids
Macchu Picchu (Something I just cannot imagine)
Venice (8 weeks and counting! I can't envision being there at all)
Tuscany (ditto)

Blessed to have seen:
Paris (every inch of it is heaven on earth for me)
Cliffs of Moher and the sun rising over Ireland from a plane (there is nothing like either)
Michelangelo's Pieta and the Sistine Chapel (the only art that has made me cry)
Pompeii (I was so moved by Pompeii, particularly the bodies in casts of ash...so sad)

The list could go on. I feel fortunate to have traveled as much as I have and seen what I have. If I were to die today, I would be very satisfied. Every trip has its gems and things that make it special and sometimes from where you least expect it.

A very thought-provoking question, tripgirl, and one that I would like to try to respond to - even if I haven't taken the time to really consider the possibilities
.
Places I am really glad to have seen:

The Washington Mall - which I see from my office window every day and never ceases to give me a thrill
Mt. Fuji
Hawaii
Paris - and many parts of France
The Swiss and Austrian Alps
Venice - and many other parts of Italy
Grand Canyon
New Mexico
Monterey
the Napa and Sonoma valleys
Hong Kong
Nantucket
Maine
London - and many parts of England

Places I would like to see:
South Africa
Kashmir - unlikely considering the current state of the world
A rainforest
Alaska - I visited once very briefly but would like to return
British Colombia
Greek Isles
New Zealand - except for the long trip

And always, I want to return to Paris and to Italy.

Thanks all and let's keep this going; it's fun and such a POSITIVE thread!!
I live in DC and so happy to hear some of you put DC sites on your list. They ARE something to see and feel I take it for granted since I pass by these extraordinary monuments every day. Thanks for making me realize that I do live in a most interesting place!

Let's keep it up until we have 1000 places listed combined of what yet is to be seen and what you have seen, what a nice challenge!

And for those who are reading the book, 1000 places, it is really nicely done and it's fun to check off where you have been to already. I will tell you the book lists limited accommodations in the places and many are of upper bracket pricing, but they give you an inkling of what the place has to offer. It's a quick read, although its thick and it's a good reference book.

What a great thread! (And what great answers!)

Must sees (I'll try to stop at 10, otherwise I might get to 1000 by myself!):

* Taj Mahal
* Rainforest (I'd love to do one of those walks through the canopies)
* Amazon
* Machu Picchu
* Argentina or Chile
* Prague
* Budapest
* Istanbul (which was Constantinople - now it's Istanbul, not Constantinople . . . am I the only one who can't say the word without thinking that?)
* Japan
* North Korea, DMZ (not likely to see THAT for a while)

Things I'm REALLY REALLY glad I've seen:

* Paris
* Pompeii and Herculaneum - Have been in my top 5 forever, just got there last week! (Worth the wait)
* Kremlin, Red Square - still one of the most moving travel moments I've ever had (must be from growing up during the cold war - never, ever thought I'd be there in person)
* Angkor
* Egypt - Pyramids, Cairo
* Great Wall
* Hong Kong
* Washington DC's corridors of power - thanks for reminding me, previous posters - I've had some really moving experiences there, too, but would not have thought to list them because it's not foriegn!
* Tulum (Mexican Yucatan)
* Chu Chi tunnels in Saigon
