10 year anniv. with 6 year old. Venice and ???

We are considering a trip to Europe to celebrate our 10th anniversary and will be traveling with our daughter (6 years old). We would really like to stay in Venice and one other city, each for 5 nights. The second city does not have to be in Italy and we have considered, as one option, Vienna. Thoughts or suggestions?

You need to give us a bit more information about what you want or we have no idea what to recommend! The options are literally endless!

Are you looking for some place with good food? Art? Scenery? A particular size???

Art, culture and food would surely interest us. Relative ease of travel between the two cities is also a factor as could be weather (ie. probably not Olso).

Assuming you want to rely on trains/planes and not rent a car?

Bologna, Florence, Rome are the obvious choices.

You didnt tell us when you will be travelling?

I would also look up the Venice airport and see where you can fly direct to and consider flying into Venice and home from your final destination to save backtracking.

This site might help you choose as well:

Good luck!

5 nights might be a bit much for Venice. Other regulars here could offer their opinions on whether there's enough to keep a 6-year-old interested for that long.

There's a night train that runs to Paris. This could be a fantastic experience for your family - or a big nightmare. As a 6-year-old, I would have loved it.

Then you'd be in Paris! With lots to do for the whole family.

Thankfully she is not a kid who has to "going" all the time and she is an excellent traveler (no complaining on long flights, etc.) Is 5 nights too long in Venice?

how about Trieste? one of the other members of my italian class has a a daughter living there and he loves it. loads of places for day trips too.

I like your own suggestion of Vienna as well - an excellent place for a 5 night stay as there is so much to do there - museums, palaces, cosy cafes, the zoo, the Prater, food that is bound to appeal to a child, easy to get around... and a good contrast to Venice.

5 years in Venice isn't too long for a sensible grown up.

Personally, I'd be demanding to be let out after 5 minutes if I were 6 again.

Is it really impossible to postpone your Venice holiday till the child's either old enough to enjoy it or has fled the nest?

In a recent week there, I swear on Canaletto's grave I didn't see anyone under 15. Not even an altar boy at St Mark's.

OK. Quick poll: Is Venice a poor choice for travel with a (albeit mature and calm) child?

I've seen plenty of children in Venice--of all ages. search this site for a few good trip reports for ideas. Off the top of my head . . . your daughter will probably enjoy riding the boats--vaporetto, traghetto, gondola; taking a mask-making class; sampling gelato every day; going to a glass-blowing exhibition; visiting a market and seeing the way things are different from at home; becoming a "local" at the small shops near where you stay.

Given where you have already traveled, I think Vienna would be good. Maybe cut a day from Venice and do Vienna and Salzburg?

I'm not a big fan of Venice, but I don't think 5 days there is too much, esp. for a first visit and esp. if any/all of you will have trouble adjusting to the time difference.

Do you have lots of winter clothing for everyone? Does your daughter do well in cold weather? It can be pretty cold in Vienna in March. Salzburg even colder.

I'd probably go to Venice and Rome.
