jjj, I feel just as you do - I go to visit family, but am always glad to get home...to the Netherlands. To each his -or her - own. Maybe we both suffer from nostalgia for how much better things were when we were younger!

Things I love about Amsterdam:
1) the Concergebouworkest
2) the Waterlooplein flea market
3) the bridges
4) Carre theater
5) the public transportation (really!)
6) the way it has managed to make the extremes of 'tolerance' into tourist attractions
7) the Jordaan
8) Broekmans & van Poppel, the sheet music store
9) street performers on the Leidseplein
10) flower market on the Singel

jjj: <sigh> I am not inconsistent, you misunderstood me. I said "The Netherlands is not a socialist country" and I said "not that there is anything wrong with being socialist". How do these two sentences make the Netherlands a socialist country?
Anyway, it is clear that you don't like the Netherlands. That's fine with me and I can't change your opinion anyway.
But please don't make ridiculous claims about the Netherlands being a socialist country and all that. For many years, the Netherlands attracted more foreign (lots of US and Japanese) capital than any other country in Europe except the UK.
Yes, we have problems in this country and we are trying to solve them. As I said earlier, this is not paradise. Still, I am very happy to be born here and live here and I don't think there are many countries where they have arranged things better than we have here. I am proud of my country and the freedoms we enjoy.
Thing I love about A'dam:

falafel and the serve yourself condiments that come along with it.

Oh yes and speculaas.

TracyB May 19th, 2003 06:16 PM

Yes I love those falafal's too...

We're headed to Amsterdam in less than two weeks and when I saw this thread...well, I couldn't resist (the political/ideological posts notwithstanding). And speaking of Van Gogh (yeah, clunky segue...sorry!) have I missed the best birthday celebrations?

An odd addition to your list of ten reasons to love Amsterdam...the Holland Casino. I've played with in casinos in London, Paris, Denmark, and many in our fair country.
The Holland Casino is small which is a plus as far as I am concerned. It is run with strict rules but gently applied.

The factor which made it one of the best for me, the players most of whom were locals were friendly. When I sat down and everyone knew I was a tourist..maybe a fish, but that's another story..and made me feel right at home. They told me the house rules, were interested as in the card rooms in New York city and chatted up during the ten or plus hours of playing Texas Hold'em.
I know it doesn't even begin to match Van Gogh and the serene canals but it is an added attraction...that is if you gamble.

I did win over 700 EU's

Honestly

1 Reason I can think of (among others...):
Lo Stivale d'Oro, Amstelstraat 49, Rembrandtplein, great Italian food.

dovima Jan 8th, 2004 08:29 AM

How about the cats who sit regally upon the counters or tables of many establishments, letting you know with a glance and a tail-flick exactly who the boss is.
And the bowls of candy next to the cash register in some stores, to be dipped into as you take your change (it's a good thing the mode of transport in A'dam seems to be leg power).
I could go on....but I would be busted for daydreaming about one of my favorite locations instead of working.

p.s., christellefv, thanks for the mini-lesson in nederlands!

dovima, You're welcome! I do not want to loose my the language I've acquired with so much work so I have to practice! ;)
