10 Days or so in the Algave
Looking to visit in May with a focus on photography, walking, wetlands, rock formations/cliffs, traditional architecture, seafood........ . Would like to use public transportation. Shopping and lounging on the beach are not priorities. Where should we base ourselves? 1, 2 or 3 base locations? |
I visited the Algarve for 6 days last March. Based in Lagos and Faro and used public transportation. Here is my trip report with links to my photos and info about the places we stayed. https://www.fodors.com/community/eur...018-a-1651723/

Thanks Isabel - I was a bit worried about exactly what you described so well. |
Rock formations/cliffs and wetlands
You'll find the rock formations and cliffs to the west of Faro, the wetlands and to the east

Tavira in the eastern Algarve would be an excellent base for the wetlands.
Around Lagos in the western Algarve for the cliffs (we stayed in Carvoeiro which is somewhat less crowded than Lagos). As a third location I would like to suggest the Costa Vicentina (officially called 'Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina') which you find, roughly, between Sagres in the utmost Western Algarve and Porto Covo, 120 km to the north. It's an area of spectacular beauty with a very rough coastline, charming coastal villages, very few tourists (especially when compared to the Algarve). We loved it there. If interested, my pictures are on Flickr - 1st part is Costa Vicentina, 2nd part is Algarve. |
