10 days on the Amalfi Coast
 

My granddaughter (age 27) and I are spending 10 days on the Amalfi Coast staying in Positano. We plan the ususals, Capri, Sorrento, Amalfi, Ravella,and 1 day in Naples.
I'm a photographer, and scenery is my biggest interest. Any tips on "what not to miss" would surely be appreciated. Also some good, not too elaboratly expensive restaurants would be good.

I hope I'm not beaten up here.

While Positano is in a beautiful setting, I really don't think there's much to the town.

I would much prefer to stay in Sorrento and use it as a jump-off point.

Much better transportation options and Sorrento is a real town.

I disagree ! Positano is what the AC is all about, albeit a vertical town. Any photographer will not mind.

I think that Positano will begin to pall after 6 days.

You might want to split your visit between P and S.

Hi Shirley - You've chosen a great base IMO - I can happily stay in Positano a week or more.

Hike the 'Path of the Gods,' take a few boat trips - and I'm sure you'll get some superb photos :)

I must say that I agree with Myer's statement, "While Positano is in a beautiful setting, I really don't think there's much to the town."

My favorite location on the Amalfi Coast is the Isle of Capri. I'm often surprised that greater emphasis is not placed on it as a destination here.

It has four sides to it unlike the Coast. It has variety. And there are essentially no cars buzzing around. And it's beautiful!

It certainly is a "what not to miss" spot IMO.

I also think that Positano is not the best base if you want to do day trips, as it's difficult to get in and out. The main coastal bus stops on a road fairly high above the town so you either have to hike up there or get the local minibus which is crowded, sweaty & IMO even worse than walking up. It can also be difficult to get on the bus at Positano. The town is almost vertical so not good for anyone who's not a great walker.

Amalfi is much better for transport links since the buses stop on the main drag at sea level. You can get a direct bus to Ravello from Amalfi, and there are lots of boat services. Amalfi, although beautiful, is also more of a 'real' town than either Positano or Sorrento, although it has to be admitted that Positano has the most stunning views.

Sorrento is not on the Amalfi Coast.

If it were me, I'd split my time between Amalfi & Capri or Amalfi/Capri/Naples if I wanted a city element. Capri is *much* nicer when not experienced as a day trip.

Sorrento is a good transportation hub, but it seemed to us pretty much a mass market, tour group sort of place compared to most of the towns that are actually on the Amalfi Coast.

10 days are a long time. Other spots of interest are Pompeii and Herculaneum, and Paestum, a well-preserved group of Greek temples just south of tha Amalfi Coast.

And some people like to go up Mt. Vesuvius.

Positano! Positano! Positano! It has everything you need - We had 5 nights and I could've easily stayed longer. I can HIGHLY recommend the Hotel Eden Roc. It's on the main road (though it's not very busy) and is within 100m of an intersection where the AC bus stops.

Gosh, I want to go back!!

10 days anywhere in that area would be heaven.

I'm not down on Sorrento as so many are, but I wouldn't recommend a photographer stay there.

I agree with Caroline_edinburgh on Amalfi and Positano, and I agree with TuckH about Capri. I would definitely spend a few nights on Capri.

Plan a full day at Pompeii (but not from Capri). A day in Naples would be nice and is easy from Capri (although it may be hard to drag yourself away from the island).

BTW, when is this trip?

I share the opinions of not staying in Positano or Sorrento. Positano is now nothing but a MONSTROUS tourist destination that is so crowded it's often difficult to walk. The whole idea of the town is to get you down in it and try to have you walk by idiotically expensive stores in hopes you buy something. I know there are many, many afficionados of Positano, but give me Praiano or Amalfi anytime.
Same for Sorrento. Too crowded and busy and it's not on the Amalfi Coast. Any flavor of the laid back coast is lost. IMHO
