We spent 9 days in Barcelona in October, 2011. We took a day trip (organized, via minivan) to Vic, Queralbs and then to Vall de Nuria. It was a nice day - could have used more time in Vic; nice hiking in Nuria. We also did a day trip to Montserrat.

Which days in October will you be traveling? That is a month when the weather can dramatically shift. The earlier you go, the better.
Which area of the Pyrenees would be nicest for you has a lot to do with how you are imagining you will spend your time, and whether you would rather eat French food or Spanish food, or drink French wine or Spanish wine (although the water there is incredibly delicious -- seriously! -- so it might not matter).

Big Russ,
I think new posters are "damned if they do, damned if they don't" -- and god help them if they try anything in between.
Since being here, I have watched new posters get ganged up and excoriated for changing their minds in the middle of a thread about what might be the nicest trip for them.
If new posters try starting new threads to ask about different destinations --- which I think is exactly the right thing to do because then you can tag the posts properly and get the attention of people who know speficially about each destination -- well, who should come along but "BigRuss" to yell at them!!!!
I saw somebody the other day start a thread in which their entire first post was nothing but bowing and scraping and pleading with "Fodorites" not to yell at them for be unsure about how to put together a last-minute trip. Sure enough, this poster was met with chilly, cold responses (the addicts can't just say "no", can they?) that made it pretty plain they were going to stoop to doing this HUGE favor just once by answering a travel question to someone who wasn't playing by the RULES.
It is all I can do not to keep posting "Fodorites, why don't you all go xx --- " well, all that would happen is that I get reported for abuse instead of the rest of you with have no excuse for this monumentally self-centered rudeness, sprayed in every direction.
If a travel question isn't one you want to answer, click on another one or go read a book or something productive.

thanks to this eclectic group of responders! i guess you are all right- yes we will run out of days in oct if we pursue all our dreams at once, and yes we are trying to figure out which location would be best for that time of year. therefore, all questions are indeed legitimate, and all responses are welcome. thank you one and all!
