1 week in Mediterranean Coast of Turkey

Hi!

We are 2 friends planning to travel to the Mediterranean Coast of Turkey for a week in July. We definitely want to go to Fethiye but we are in need of suggestions and recommendations on where else to go! We want to spend our time at a nice beach and also want to sightsee and we are very interested in seeing historical sights - ruins etc.

What's the best way to get to the mediterranean coast? fly directly to Antalya and catch the bus to get around to the different destinations?

Thanks for the help in advance!!

Cheers,

K

We were in Turkey last year in June and on our tour visited the Med part - well worth it. Beautiful towns & beaches ( sand!!!) Coming from Australia we have been disappointed before. I was amazed by the facilities offered at the beaches - change shelters, clean toilet blocks etc!!! Fethiye is GORGEOUS, we actually took the local buses and went to the Blue Lagoon for the day, which was fun travelling with the locals, altho' a lot of Brits as well. Antalya was also lovely, but a much bigger city, lovely old part to wander around in. We also travelled to Kas. Bodrum would be worth a couple of days stay( we were ltd to one night on the tour) it was very Greek in character & I would stay in or near the old part of the town.
Mamaris is a big tourist town, but it was still fun to walk around, plenty of bars, restaurants, shops!!!! As it was around 35C when we were there and we 'd been travelling for around 3 & half weeks, we treated as our R&R.
Didn't get to Kusadasi, so can't comment.
But from Bodrum you can get on a gulet( boat) for a few days; but time was against it for us. We discovered that this could have been organised for us in Istanbul at any one of numerous travel agencies. Turkey is one of the most beautiful countries full of history, ruins, great food, friendly people. What a shame you can't make Cappadocia, where we took a ballon ride over the fairy chimneys- the HIGHLIGHT of our wonderful trip. We also had a week in Istanbul before we took our tour and this was fantastic as well. Hope this helps!!

Apart from Mediterranean Coast of Turkey, there are lots of other cultural attractions elsewhere in the country include the sites of Ephesus, Troy, Pergamon, House of the Virgin Mary, Pamukkale, Hierapolis, Trabzon] (where one of the oldest monasteries is the Sümela Monastery), Konya (where the poet Rumi had spent most of his life), Didyma, Church of Antioch, religious places in Mardin (such as Deyrülzafarân Monastery), and the ruined cities and landscapes of Cappadocia.

Diyarbakır is also an important historic city.

Hi

A couple of years ago we had a fantastic 3 week holiday in Turkey with a week on the Mediterranean coast.

From Pamukkale we took the bus to Kas, stopping only in Fethiye to change buses. Enjoyed Kas for four nights, the highlight being a kayaking tour to Kekova Island where you kayak over the ancient city of Simea. Kas does not have beaches but swimming is great from platforms on the rocky shore. Very scenic spot.

Then we took a bus to Cirali for three nights. A small village but the beach is fantastic. The historical site of Olympos is right on the beach. Our hotel took us one evening to hike up to the very interesting flames of Chimaera.

Then onto Antalya for one night before catching the all night bus to Cappadocia. Antalya has a great museum.

We did not book any buses in advance and didn't have any problems. There are so many historical sights to see in the area so having a car would be advantageous but we were happy to relax a bit. I think flying into Antalya would work well, just not sure what airport you would fly out of near Fethiye.

Happy Travels!

I agree with a few others that have mentioned cirali as an alternative destination..fly into Antalya..and see if you can arrange your return flights out of Dalaman for Fethiye..or vice versa.

are you flying into Istanbul for your arrival in Turkey or somwhere else..where are you coming from ?

you could easily spend your entire week in cirali if you like..

you can take a bus from Cirali to Fethiye ( takes about 5 hrs )

sorry forgot to add this;

Turkey has dozens of pristine beaches, among the finest of which is Cirali, a long stretch of fine white sand at the mouth of a towering canyon. The beach, an easy walk from the ruined city of Olympos, is a protected nesting ground for loggerhead turtles. After dark, lights on the shore are extinguished so as not to confuse the hatching babies. On a moonless night, the view of the Milky Way is phenomenal.

Thanks for the suggestion guys! we have decided to start from Antalya for 1 night then Cirali and also visiting Olympos for 2 nights then Fethiye for 2 nights, we are thinking of staying 1 night in a town on the way to Bodrum. Can you pls recommend where's a nice town to visit on route to Bodrum and how many days should we stay in Bodrum? is 2 nights enough?

Thanks in advance!!
