1 week, 1 town
 

My son will have one week (12/22-12/28) to experience one city at the end of his semester in Sevilla. He originally planned on Paris but now is considering other locations. And these locations will be one of the biggies: Paris, Rome, Venice, Athens, etc., you get the picture. He's a first time European traveler who loves soccer, fashion, film, architecture, street art, food and nightlife. He is also money conscious but not destitute. What have you got?

Lisbon.

Already going next month as a part of the program. This final week is his to explore because I messed up the plane reservations which gives him 6 days on the loose. He wants to go to one place and absorb what he can. He will have already hit the Iberian peninsula and Tangier. I think he's looking for something further afield.

Rome. Come on, it's the Eternal City.

Out of that list and for the interests mentioned, I'd pick Rome or Paris.

Since we're referring to Huckleberry Finn, why not St. Louis? But actually, since your son will be in Sevilla, why not enjoy the Christmas season in Sevilla, Granada, Malaga and even Madrid? It can be very exciting and probably nothing like he has experienced at home.

Genoa and Cinque Terre.

He'll be in Europe over Christmas. Paris is a good choice. Even when everything else is closed, he can still walk the streets and find the hidden gems.

Apartment in Paris for a week, so he can have a little breakfast on Christmas day.

That's funny, I suggested Genoa and Cinque Terra also, but I think it's really going to boil down to Rome or Paris. I was hoping someone would give a reason or two for Berlin--I've never been, but somehow I think it might be just edgy enough. I don't know, I keep thinking about those incredible views from Wings of Desire.

Torino is my suggestion. It ticks all the boxes. That or Berlin. I prefer the food and fashion in Torino, but Berlin has the more exciting architecture. Toss up as to which as the more interesting film history (but Torino's got the better film museum). Soccer? Well, my heart's with Italy and Torino's got a great team. Street art in just about equal in Berlin and Torino. Nightlife too, but Berlin might have the somewhat younger scene. Does he prefer beer or wine? That would make the choice simple. Also, if feels the need for something "Christmas-y," Germany is all about that. Italy, not so much so.

Christmas is a terrible time to book a trip to le Cinque Terre. It's one of the few times of the year when one can get ice, paralyzing everything.

Paris or Rome. Cinque Terre would be a terrible choice for that time of year and a strange choice if he has never been to Paris or Rome. They both have all of the things he loves and plenty to keep him busy for 6 days.

amsterdam ok hits most of soccer, fashion, film, architecture, street art, food and nightlife, except the fashion thing though the design museum might help

Berlin is a fine city especially for a young man. Lots of energy. I love Berlin. He only has a week, so he loses one day on Christmas day when everything is closed.

How special is Christmas to him? Berlin, fine as it is, doesn't have a lot of public art except for the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, and that might be rather bleak on Christmas day, who knows?

Wouldn't to Amsterdman for food and fashion. Antwerpen, maybe, not Amsterdam.

How about Istanbul? No time lost to Christmas, warmer than the northern cities and a fabulous city.

Sure Berlin has public art, but not as much as Paris.
