1 Night Paris before Eurostar - Where to stay
 

So we're traveling from Bangalore to Paris in late June. We will have spent 5 fully days in Paris in earlier June (traveling from Atlanta). We will land late morning from India. We will travel to London the next day 10am departure (ish) Eurostar..... So really one afternoon and evening. We have friends that we'll visit.

Trying to decide where to stay. (Mom and 3 girls 14, 11, 7)

I've been researching hotels near Gare du Nord, with the idea it would be ideal having traveled from India the day before as close as possible...but nothing is catching my eye....

I don't mind paying for taxi but won't want to be snarled in traffic.... and likely we won't be eager to haul luggage through metro.

We'll be seeing friends staying in Latin Quarter area.....in the afternoon early evening....

Looking for ideas... Thanks for any thoughts.

I should say that while our budget is higher for other parts of our month long trip for this night I'm thinking about 125 - 150 Euro =/-

I'd suggest that you stay somewhere on the RER B line. That way, you could take the RER B to your lodging if you are so inclined without having to make interchanges to the metro. I'd even say that you should stay near Gare du Nord for ease of both arrival and departure. That being said, your budget is low for a quad room in central Paris, even in the less pricey area near the station, in late June. The hotel that I can recommend unreservedly is double the high end of your budget. If you raise your budget take a look at Hotel Mademoiselle (5 minute walk to Gare du Nord). One hotel that is in your budget is Hotel ibis Paris Gare du Nord TGV (31-33 Rue De Saint Quentin 75010 Paris). It is very important that you look at this Ibis and not the others with Gare du Nord in their names because they are not as good as this one.

Actually, as I think about it, the Ibis probably will not work because they may allow no more than 3 to a room. Take a look Avalon Hotel on Blvd de Magenta -- never stayed there but have heard that it is a good choice in the area.

hmmm perhaps my budget is low.... for FOUR.

May have to consider if perhaps just transfer straight to London an skip the stop in Paris for 1 night. Just thought best to get a sleep in Paris as we'll want to be fresh upon arrival to London. Our friends from home happen to be in Paris that day too so could be fun.....

I guess I'd also like a sense that of just staying anywhere and hopping in a cab in the morning..... why stay near Gare du Nord....

I thought that you did not want to be snarled in traffic in the morning to catch the train at Gare du Nord or hauling luggage through the metro/RER. Take a look at Hotel Marignan on Rue Sommerard. They could well be sold out at this point but they have quads for 140 (shared shower) to 165 euros per night. Another one to look at is Hotel Cluny Sorbonne 160 euros per night and while much of June is already sold out, your date might well still be available. These are basic hotels but might be close to your friends. The Cluny Sorbonne is a 5 minute walk to the RER B stop Luxembourg so it would be easy to take mass transit to Gare du Nord.

My assumption is that it could be better to stay near Gare du Nord to avoid traffic and transport with luggage but maybe it's not worth worrying about that..... or maybe I'm trading off so much... that should figure out another plan.... we haven't bought our Eurostar tickets yet so I have some flex.... to make a good plan. I'd like to head out in morning.

We stayed across the street from the Gare du Nord when on a tour and enjoyed it just fine. There are good hotels right there, and we usually trek over there on our trips now to eat mussels in one of the cafes along the avenue there.
And yes, your budget is low for 4, IMO.

JAMH - just booked a room at the Marignan. The price at 140 Euros was great compared to anything that suited us in near the station. So we'll take taxi as needed and have the flexibility of being closer to our friends instead of closer to station. They said the usually require 3 night minimum during June but I had mentioned they had been recommended to me in the reservation form so they waived the requirement!

I didn't realize how difficult and expensive a quad room could be. We are party of five at our earlier part of trip and staying in a flat that now seems a wonderful bargain!

Now to book the Eurostar tickets .... Just saying these words.... Paris hotel, tickets is a nice thing on a Monday morning.

Paris is a major European capital, I'm not sure where you are used to hotel costs, but in the US, that would not get you a quad room in any large city I know of. It could get you a room with two queen beds in a chain hotel/motel in smaller, cheaper cities or areas, or near the highways. I'm going to Salt Lake City tomorrow and even there, you can't get a room in a chain hotel for that rate. I'm paying $184 a night just for a HOliday Inn.

4 people in a taxi with I am guessing at least 4 suitcases?? Will that all fit or will you need a car service.

Of course Christina.... I knew the budget was low and was willing to be flexible but was just trying for a bargain. I guess in my mind since we'd rented a lovely apartment for less that 200 euro a night I thought we could get a passable hotel room for a night. I see all sorts of articles about Paris hotels for 150 Euro..... Getting into the nitty gritty I saw this was more complex for our party but guess what.... It worked! I now have a reservation for 140 Euro in a well regarded although budget hotel. I will need to arrange the transport which will add cost, but likely we'd have taken a taxi in evening after time with our friends anyway.....

You can order a taxi for that number and that luggage with no problem. Ask the hotel desk to arrange it.
No real need to take a taxi after being with your friends--metro or bus would surely be a possibility.

Now we are staying close to our friends so we have no issues with transport until transfer to train. I just booked Eurostar and ended up with noon departure to save more money..... so now we have more flex and I'm glad to be in the neighborhood we are in for our quick 24 hours in Paris. (after 6 days earlier in month)

How about one of the Ibis Styles hotels either at Gare du Nord or Gare de l'Est? An added bonus is that breakfast is included in the rates.

The Marignan is a good choice. Have you read any reviews of it on TripAdvisor? I think that you will be pleasantly surprised given its cost. It is only about a 7 to 10 minute walk from the Saint Michel-Notre Dame stop on the RER if you want to use mass transit to get into the city or if you want to take mass transit to Gare du Nord. There are very clear directions for taking the RER B from CDG on the hotel's website.
