1 night in Split or Trogir

We are driving from Dubrovnik to the Split/Trogir and staying 1 night on our way to visit family in Krk and Cres. Should we stay in Split or Trogir? Is it realistic to see Plitvce on the drive from Split to Krk? I know it is not enough time for the area but we need a stop over between Dubrovnik and Krk. What are the highlights in the Split Trogir area that are must sees. Thanks

All depends on your interests (which we don't know).
Split - Plitvice - Krk is a very long drive; the visit of Krka Falls Park would be easier.

Trogir's old town is a lot smaller than Split and more charming than Split in my opinion...but probably a lot less interesting than Split. Diocletian's Palace in Split is unique for sure. I don't think it's a mistake to stay in one and not the other - depends on your interests. I didn't drive in Split but recall reading it is not necessarily easy to navigate with a car (for a visotor). I did drive to Trogir (different trip) and parked at my hotel just outside the tiny old town and that was easy enough. Trogir is somewhat off the A1 as is Split, so it's not exactly a stop right off the highway. I'd guess in high season there is a lot of traffic, but I was there in May. Not sure when you are going.

I guess...I'd probably choose Split if I had to choose one, even though I preferred Trogir, if that makes any sense! Just because Split has more of interest to see.

If you're looking for another nice town to stop in, you could stop in Sibenik, which is a lot smaller than Split and easy to drive into off the A1 highway. I suspect you could get in and out a lot faster than into/out of Split, and that might give you more time to get on to Plitvice if you are in a time crunch.

What about Omis? It is about 20 minutes South of Split and just off the main coastal road. It has a river, the beach an old tower to climb and lots of narrow cobbled streets with restaurants and small shops. We only spent a few hours there but would love to go back. Been to Split twice but you need to stay in the old town to really get the feel of the place. Has a lovely waterfront to walk along called the Riva.
