1 night in Brienz
 

Any suggestions for a hotel for 1 night in Brienz-looking for accomodations no more than 150CH.

Message: Brienz - we had a rental car (VW Polo 6-speed) and drove in the rain to Brienz. The trip was easy - a few tunnels and one pass but the driving was not difficult. This is a beautiful town on a lake, surrounded by mountains. Even in the clouds, it was beautiful and we could not help wondering how spectacular it would be with a blue sky. We went to this town to visit the Huggler-Wyss wood-carving store and factory. We arrived on Sunday and only a few shops were open. It was too cloudy to take the cog-wheel train up the mountain but we walked the lake promenade and up a few hills for the view. We stayed at <b>Garni Schonegg</b>. It is a nice walk up the hill from the train station. The rooms were clean and mine had a huge bathtub - a nice way to warm up after being out in the rain! Breakfast was the typical croissant, rolls, jelly, coffee/tea and juice. We left after shopping and visiting the woodcarving stores.

When I was in Brienz, I stayed at the Messmer. It was a nice hotel, with a good restaurant, but no a/c. Try to get a room that is not above the outdoor cafe, as it tends to be noisy.

Just One night? Well that's better than nothing! I usually stay 7-10 days in a vacation apt, have never tried the hotels.
Good site ias above www.alpenregion.ch look under Unterkunft (accomoadations), click on english and select Brienz as home base.
Hotel Adler de la Gare always looked nice, but they are set up more as vacation apts, and I am not sure that they rent for single nights.
Hotel Wesses Kreuz at 80 CHF per person is very central (across from tiny RR and boat dock) and convenient for outings.
Hotel Garni Walz is about three blocks from the RR, in a qieter section...ask for a room overlooking the lake.
Grandhotel Giessbach is not in Brienz proper, but across the lake, overlooking the famous waterfalls...they are apt to be expensive.

Oops! The Hotel Messmer is in Bregenz, Austria. A senior moment, if you will. Sorry about that.

I can vouch for the Hotel Weisses Kreuz mentioned above. I'm not certain that our spelling is entirely correct. J.

I stayed at the Hotel Baeren for three nights. It leans toward the budget category, but it has a beautiful view of the lake and a nice terrace restaurant.

Thanks for recommendations. Any thoughts about Grandhotel Giessbach (they do have rooms for about 170ch), Chalet Rothorn or Lindenhof? These three are all recommended by Fodors.

Sorry, I've only seen the Gandhotel from the outside. Lovely setting for relaxing. Depends on what you want to do with your short time in Brienz.
Chalet Rothorn looks kind of rustic. wbsites with phots and english descriptions:
