1 day trip to Verona & Lago di Garda or renting a car?

Hi, can someone advise if is recomended to either a one day trip from Venice to Verona & Lago di Garda in Spanish or is better to rent a car and spend the night in Sirmione.
Thanks I will appreciate your comments.

What did you hope to see in Verona? If you spent the night in Sirmione, would you drive to other parts of the lake on the following day before returning to Venice?

If you were hoping to drive to both towns in one day, be aware that the car rental offices in Piazzale Roma and at the Mestre station close at 6:30p. Airport offices close at midnight. The drive from Sirmione to Piazzale Roma would take close to 2.5 hours.

There's more than enough to see in lovely Verona for a whole day. It's a easy day trip via train from Venice. No need to do a tour or rent a car. I rented a apartment in Verona last summer for a week and did a day trip to Sirmione via bus (also easy). I was not that impressed with Sirmione. But, maybe that's because I was on Lake Como for 5 nights on a previous trip. The 2 just don't compare IMO. So, if it were me, I would train to Verona for a day, visit all it's treasures and not go to Sirmione.
